Football 101 for Women

Picture 1.png

I’ve been looking forward to advent of football season since Feb. 8, the day after the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl. (Yahoo!)

Apparently, not everyone cares as much I do about the game. Maybe it’s because they don’t understand it, and nobody’s ever taken the time to (nicely) explain it to them.

This Sunday, 1379 Family Sports Shop will do just that. The store is hosting a “Football 101: Intro to Football for Women” from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15 at the West Austin Youth Association, 1314 Exposition Blvd.

Two former NFL players — Mike Rosenthal, who played with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings, and Cody Carlson, who played with the Houston Oilers — along with two other elite local players — Randall Schultz, who played at Rice University, and Mark Mangum, who played for University of Wisconsin and now directs Westlake Pop Warner — will lead the clinic.

Participants will learn about player positions and functions, general rules and regulations, and the basics of football strategy.

Registration is $25 and includes a playbook to take home, pretzels and beer.

The event is a fund-raiser for Gridiron Heroes Spinal Cord Injury Foundation, which provides resources and support to athletes who have sustained spinal cord injuries.

Register at 1379 Sports Shop or online.

I am no chauvinist. But every time I read something in the news about women and football, I recall that joke by Phyllis Diller: The reason there are no women football leagues is that 11 of them would never wear the same outfit in public.
