Upcoming Austin fitness events

Lots of stuff on the fitness calendar you should know about, Austin. Here’s a quick run-down:

  • Shammies ‘N Koozies Ride & Float: This inaugural event was postponed by flooding earlier this summer and rescheduled for Saturday, Aug. 7. The event combines a fully-supported 45- or 65-mile bike ride, a barbecue and a leisurely float down the Guadalupe River. Cost is $80 for the ride only or $95 for the ride and float, plus $15 for a shuttle ride back to Wimberley. A portion of proceeds benefits the Friends of Blue Hole Foundation.   • Movies at LBJ Ranch: The 1968 cult classic “Planet of the Apes” will be shown at dusk Saturday, Aug. 14 at the historic Lyndon B. Johnson Ranch near Stonewall. Gates open at 7 p.m. and the movie shows at dusk. Admission is free. Parking is available on the taxiway adjacent to the Hangar visitor center. Bring chairs or blankets; picnicking is encouraged.   • Title Nine Bra Fit Fest: Title Nine bra-fit expert June Fox from Moving Comfort will help you find the perfect bra for your fitness needs from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19 at Title Nine Austin, 500 N.   • Dragon Boats: Meet members of the Austin Coolers Dragon Boat Team and learn more about the fast growing international water sport of dragon boating. The Coolers will be at Blue Bamboo Viet Thai Grill in Escarpment Village shopping center, 5900 West Slaughter Lane, from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20.   • Learn to Fish Day: Children of all ages can learn fishing tips and techniques from experts at a free Learn to Fish event from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 at Southwest Regional Park, 3005 County Road 175 in Leander. Clark Wendlandt, the 2009 Angler of the Year, will attend and participants will be guided through learning stations focusing on basic tackle, bait selection, knot tying, boat casting and water safety. All activities are in preparation for the day’s objective — to catch (and release) fish.   • Zilker Tree Rescue Project: The Austin Parks Foundation needs hundreds of volunteers to help mulch and water 500 trees being planted in Zilker Park. Volunteer mulching work days are scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 21 and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 28. Sign up at www.austinparks.org.
