Win a women’s triathlon book!

triforwomen_cover.jpg

Why a special triathlon book for women? We’re different, of course!

Ten-time Ironman finisher, triathlon coach and part-time Austin resident Lisa Lynam knows that, and it’s why she wrote “Triathlon for Women: A Mind-Body-Spirit Approach for Female Athletes” ($16.95, Meyer & Meyer Sport).

Lynam sent four copies of her book over, and I’m giving them away. Post on this blog, telling me why you need the book.

I’ll look over all the responses and pick four winners, which I’ll post on this blog. (I’ll also ask the winners to email their snail mail addresses to me at pleblanc@statesman.com.)

The book covers everything from shopping for equipment to basic training, mental preparation, nutrition tips, pre-race checklists and recipes. One thing it has that I haven’t seen anywhere else? Information on how menstrual cycles affect training and performance.

Lynam spends her time in Austin and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

The book is courtesy of Meyer and Meyer Sports and is available at area bookstores.

I’d love the opportunity to win the book. As a working mother and aspiring triathlete, I am constantly looking for ways to improve my training while balancing a very hectic work/home life.

It doesn’t help that most of the books I’ve found - including one dedicated to the newbie - have been written by men.

Oh, and please tell me there is a section on getting-over-the-paralyzing-fear-of-open-water.

I would love to win this book. It would empower me to set new goals and to achieve goals that are set and seem unreachable for the way I train. I would loev to get this book…to train better…I have been running after 17 years and love every moment of this running life.

It would help me train and manage the balance between home and work.

I hope I win….Also cos…I dont win anything…No luck of that sorts.

I am posting again as I did not see my prev post being posted here.

I would love to recieve this book because it would empower me to set new goals and to reach goals that has been set…and seem impossible to reach. I had been a avid runner 17 years ago and never in my life thought I would go back and start running again. I love every moment of it… I joined the running team at work….cancelled my dance classes since they are on the same day as the races…and not at all upset about it. I love the fact that I have gotten back to my groove…and I would really like to train better with the help of your book. Since it is written by a women….it has to be great. I am not a feminist…but i think it would relate to me more.

If i train with the book then I have more time to balance out the work and life stresses. I would really love to win the book…..cos…I never win anything …really , jsut not lucky that way. BUT VERY GLAD TO BE RUNNING……!!

I would love to win this book, as I am rubbish at being a women!! I get frustrated by my hormones and the way way testosterone fuelled men fly by me on the bike leg.

I would be grateful on any advice to improve and get faster or if not faster, maybe a little fitter.

Thank you :)

I’m requesting it for inspiration, really. I had a baby in late October and am trying to lose the 60+ lbs of baby weight I gained. I joined the gym in January and have about 15 more lbs to go. They are stubborn though! I’m interested in triathlon training to change up my routine and inspire me to keep with it at the gym.

I’ve done a few triathlons in my day… but they’ve all been sprint/short course tris. I am currently training for the Longhorn Half Iron this year. And I’ve learned (or at least encountered) a lot of things in my training. I’ve learned that I can’t eat like they say to in the other triathlon books and articles I’ve read. My small body can’t handle all that stuff that men can eat. I’ve gained weight trying to follow nutrition plans for men in training. Then I change because I don’t like it, but then I’m not strong enough to finish my daily training. Nutrition is such an important part of triathlon training, but one of the easiest things to screw up. Every time I take to the course, I have doubts. My mentality is not in tune with my body, and that is both frusterating and painful. I’m sure many women (and men) experience this, and I hope that Ms. Lynam touches on this in her book, because it’s not something that you can find in just any tri book. And one more thing— GO GIRLS!!!

I would love to win this book, but it’s not for me. It would be for my girlfriend, who is really itching to get into the sport after watching me do my first TRI at the Rookie Triathlon last month. After the race she said that everyone looked like they were having fun even if they weren’t winning.

She really inspired me to get in better shape when she did the Austin Distance Challange last year. It would be a great suprise to be able to give her this book.

I’m doing my second triathlon this Sunday but I’m not really prepared for it. I’m a pieced-together wannabe triathlete who has “majored” in running for the past 40 years. I want to learn how to really prepare, and doing better preparation can excel not just jump in. I’m not a group training kind of person but do the running, swimming, and biking on my own, by myself and I find that a book is the perfect way to get a better picture of what I should and shouldn’t be doing. I can’t wait till Sunday; from start to finish, the feeling of fellowship is like no other!

I’d love to win a copy of Lynam’s book. I have only done a handful of sprint tris as cross training since I am more of a runner, but I am thinking about attempting long-distance tris. Women do have different nutrition needs and mind-body challenges,so it would be great to learn from a successful female athlete.

This is a great way to get folks excited about doing triathlons! Thanks Pam!

Truthfully, I would appreciate the chance to give my wife this book. She is a regular runner and has been flirting with the idea of triathlons for a while. My hope would be to give her a little more info on the sport and maybe this book could push her over the edge to go for it!

Leah is a fantastic mom and supports both me and our daughter in every way she can, so giving something back to her, something she did not expect or ask for, would be great! Our little girl has a great role model in her mother, and this could be yet another way mom can show her a positive aspect of life and help mold her into a Fit City Girl.

Congrats to whomever you award this to; I hope it serves them well. And thanks again Pam for spreading the word of fitness in Austin.

I have worked out and been active off and on throughout my entire life but never really entered any races or taken my workouts to the next level. I have been toying with the idea of a triathlon for a few months now, but have been unsure how to approach and train for it. I would love the opportunity to win the book to help me prepare to meet a new goal and continue to work towards living a healthier lifestyle.
Thanks!

I write encouragement for triathletes on my blog IronMakeover.com. I also volunteer as a moderator in active.com’s triathlon community & I’m earning my level 1 coaching certification from USA Triathlon in July. I’d love to discuss/feature “Triathlon for Women: A Mind-Body-Spirit Approach for Female Athletes” in each of these venues. Thanks for this opportunity to reach & encourage current & future triathletes!

I thought I’d drop a note here to thank everyone for their interest and eagerness to TRI for a book!

Thanks especially for the men for taking the time to show support for their women. Triathlon may be an individual sport, but succceeding at challenging goals don’t happen without a team of supporters. While this is a book for women, men are still part of the picture. My favorite chapter to write was the one with stories how people involved their friends, family, significant other. And page 117’s Ironmate Survival Guide for the men!

The book never would have happened without the great men in Austin I was fortunate to have as supporters, training partners and friends.

Hey Pam!

Personally, as a Fitness Professional, who dedicates her life to keeping women (and of course men) stong, I love resources. I will share everything I know with my clients, but need more education in the area to give THEM more. I am an adventure racer, a little different than a tri-athlete.

I will prove to you I learned about how to complete an Ironman by doing it and documenting my workouts.

=) SARAH
