Tons of events are going on in Austin in the next few weeks. Here’s a sampling:
- The LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour — The second annual LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour on the LBJ Ranch near Stonewall starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 28. Cyclists can choose from courses of 32, 45 and 62 miles. Afterward, at 11 a.m., Luci Baines Johnson, daughter of Lyndon and “Lady Bird” Johnson, will lead an easy 10-mile ride around the ranch. This special ride includes reminiscences and stories about her parents and life on the ranch in the 1960s and includes several stops at various historic locations. Registration is $40. - Rosedale Ride — The 15th annual Rosedale Ride is scheduled for Saturday, March 28. Cyclists can choose from a Kid’s Fun Ride or courses of 22, 42 or 62 miles. The ride begins and ends at Samsung, winding through the gently rolling countryside east of Austin. Register in person for $30 starting at 7 a.m. the day of the ride. Proceeds benefit the Rosedale School. For more information go to http://rosedaleride.org.
- ATXcellent Adventure — The YWCA of Greater Austin will host its third annual ATXcellent Adventure!, Austin’s own amazing race, on Saturday, April 4. With kooky clues and daffy challenges, teams of two will kick off from the Austin Amtrak Station at 250 N. Lamar Blvd. beginning 8:45 a.m. By solving riddles, performing challenging tasks, and using their navigation skills, the teams will be challenged to find all the stops in the vicinity of Lady Bird Lake. - Z-Man Recon Challenge — The University of Texas Naval ROTC Battalion will host the Zimmerman Recon Challenge, a 9-mile, multi-sport competition that pushes participants to the edge of their physical limits. The race consists of an 800-meter swim, 40 pull-ups, a 5K run, 100 push-ups, a 5K run carrying a 35-pound pack, 200 sit-ups and another 5K run. The race honors Christopher Zimmerman of Austin, who was killed Sept. 20 while on patrol in Iraq. Registration is $40 per individual or $200 per team of four until March 31 (fees go up to $60 and $240 April 1 until race day). Prceeds benefit the Christopher Michael Zimmerman Memorial Foundation, which provides athletic grants and scholarships to area youth. For more information go to www.zmanchallenge.com.
- Toughest Race in Texas — Look for quick turns, narrow paths, steep limestone slopes and the occasional scurrying armadillo at The Toughest Race in Texas on April 4 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, 2900 Bunny Run. A 10K, 5K and 1-mile run are planned, starting at 8 a.m. Registration is $30 for the 10K and 5K or $15 for the 1-mile run. Online registration closes at midnight April 2. - Pedal Power Ride — The 10th Annual Pedal Power Wildflower Ride is scheduled for Saturday, April 4 in Stonewall. Cyclists can choose from 12, 23, 36 and 60-mile routes. Proceeds benefit the Hill Country Chidren’s Advocacy Center. Registration is $40 on ride day and includes the fully supported ride and a spaghetti lunch.
