Training clinics galore!

So many training programs and clinics are gearing up around town that I decided to put them all together here:

  • Iron Chicks triathlon clinics: Iron Chicks and Rogue Running will host two informational “Learn How to Tri” sessions for women interested in doing a triathlon. The first is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 24 at BettySport at The Domain. The second is set for 5:30 p.m. Wedneday, March 25 at BettySport, 12 Street at Lamar Boulevard.
  • Buffalo Springs Training Camp: Austin’s own Source Endurance will host a training camp on the Buffalo Springs Lake Triathlon course May 28-31. Learn from elite athletes and consultants and get in a long weekend of training. Highlights include use of a power meter for the weekend, race power prediction, full run and bike course preview, two open water swims on the race course, two meals, nightly talks on training, racing and the course, Source Endurance triathlon kit, energy gels, bars and sports drinks.   • Shiner GASP A kick-off party and barbecue to get people fired up about the Shiner GASP bike ride is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Saturday, March 28 at Jack and Adam’s, 1210 Barton Springs Road. The Great Austin to Shiner Pedal is May 2. The ride’s director will be on hand to answer questions. For more information go to www.jackandadams.com.
  • Trizones Training Info Sessions: Is that a triathlete you see in the mirror? Learn about what it’s like to train for a tri and what to expect at your first triathlon. Sessions at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 21 at Jack and Adam’s, 1210 Barton Springs Road; 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 23 at RunTex at the Triangle, 4615 N. Lamar, Ste. 301; 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, REI Round Rock, 201 University Oaks Blvd.; and 7 p.m. Thursday, April 2 at REI Downtown, 601 N. Lamar Blvd. Another session about the gear you really need before getting started is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 25 at the Triangle, 4615 N.   • Tri Zones: Tri Zones is offering a 10-week women’s training program leading up to spring triathlon season. Teams meet twice weekly starting March 28 for coach-led pool swims, bike rides, runs, brick workouts and transition practices. Tri Zones has added a new women’s team in 2009 which meets on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Three other teams meet on Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings and are geographically located - North Austin, South Austin and Round Rock/Cedar Park. Each team offers two levels - First Tri (for beginners), and Tri, Tri Again (for those with triathlon experience). Tri Zones also offers an Intermediate training program for experienced triathletes who wish to improve skills and performance while maintaining camaraderie.   • Red Licorice triathlon clinics: Red Licorice will hold free clinics in advance of the Women’s Triathlon Series. Participants receive 20 percent off at Bicycle Sport Shop. The first will focus on “Gearing and Clipping Out” and is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, March 28 at Bicycle Sport Shop, 517 S. Lamar Blvd. The second will focus on “Apparel and Brick Workout” and is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5 at Bicycle Sport Shop.

  • Swim clinics: Team Texas Swimming and Red Licorice will hold a free “Wetsuit Clinic plus a Boost Your Confidence Lecture with Keith Bell” at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 2 at Austin Tri-Cyclist, 923 Barton Springs Road. Learn about open water swimming from Dr. Keith Bell, sports psychologist and author of 10 books on performance, then learn about proper wetsuit fit, selecting a wetsuit and wetsuit benefits from other experts. Keith Bell and Sandy Neilson-Bell will host another open water swim clinic starting at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 19 at Quarry Lake at Pure Austin, 4210 W. Braker Lane. A lecture will be followed by a timed open water swim starting at noon. Cost is $40 for the clinic and swim or $25 for the swim only. For more information go to www.redlicoriceevents.com.
  • Danskin SheROX Triathlon Information Clinics: Learn what you need to know to prepare for a successful race day at an info session hosted by Sheila Taormina, a world champion triathlete and passionate motivator. The first is set for 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 31 at REI Gateway, 9901 North Capitol of Texas Highway, Suite 200. RSVP to Beth Waters at (512) 343-5550. The second is set for 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 1 at REI Austin Downtown, 601 North Lamar Boulevard . RSVP to Courtney Jeffries at (512) 482-3357.
