Help me plan my season

I’m trying to figure out what events to sign up for this year. I’m feeling a little overwhelmed! Austin offers so many swimming, running, cycling, adventure racing, triathloning (and more) events that you could do one every weekend and never run out of races.
I mentioned my dilemma on my FaceBook page and immediately people started telling me what events I ought to do. Obviously, I need more input from you!
I’m also doing the Statesman Capitol 10,000, of course. Gotta do that classic Austin race, which is March 29. Go here.
I’ve always done the Cap2K Open Water Swim Race. I love to swim, and I love to swim in rivers and lakes. I especially love to swim from Red Bud Isle to the Rowing Dock. (That’s me swimming the course with race organizers Keith and Sandy Bell, above) Clear, cold water, limestone cliffs, fishies …. sigh. It’s the best. Look for it on May 3. Go here.
Lately, I’ve been doing the Danskin Women’s Triathlon as a relay with two friends. I do the swim, they do the bike and run. Which is great. It takes the pressure off and we always do pretty well. This year, we’ve got two big women’s triathlons — the Trek Women’s Triathlon (go here) on May 17 and the Danskin SheROX Triathlon (go here) on June 7. The photo below is me at the 2008 race.
I’m already planning on doing the Real Ale Ride in Blanco on May 30. I’ve never done it, but it sounds fun … should be a hilly ride, followed by barbecue (or portabello mushroom burgers) and live music. Go here.
I usually do the Pedal Power Wildflower Ride (go here) out at the LBJ Ranch State Park (and love it!), but this year I’ve already committed to doing the Zooma Half Marathon, which is scheduled for the same day, April 4. It’s the first year for the Zooma, another women’s event, and I want to try something different. Go here.
So … what else should I do, gang? What’s on your schedule this season?

Those are all nice participatory events and great that you do them however maybe it is time for you to step up your challenges and competition level by 1) training to be in the top 5 in your age group in one of the Olympic Triathlons for get the lame tri-relay really no one is impressed and 2) racing your bike at the weekly Kennyhill race series: www.drivewayseries.com The bike race series has new management this year and by early results they have made great improvements above what was the best race series in the state or region.

Dear CO2, What? Why! Are you nuts? Ha! Pam

Pam, such an poor attitude from someone who most recently flew down triple back diamond ski slopes, pushed themselves to complete a marathon in spite of their whole body breaking down and went on a month long diet of only eating carrots and lettuce. I would think you are up to any challenge. Push your limits, you truly won’t know what you can become or do till you do. You know how to ride a bike, run, and swim. My suggestion is simply an extension of your current regular activities.

Hey CO2, I actually push myself on a pretty regular basis. I’m still offended that you reduced it all to “nice participatory events.” What about the Highland Lakes Challenge I did? Or riding my bike from Durango to Moab? What races do you do?

Pam, you support my point with your response that you have what it takes. I believe it is only through competition that we grow. I suggest you set demanding competition goals to be a stretch but achievable. For swimming how about entering USMS meets and setting the goal to be in the top ten or five in the country in your event(s) after you qualify and go to Master Nationals? You ride your bike often, why not race it at the local and state level sanctioned events? You are now a runner, can you place in the top 10 or 20 in your age group in the Cap 10K? Can you win your age group in a triathlon this year? You asked for new goal suggestions, just trying to help.

Pam, I recommend a strict cross-training schedule of breakfast tacos, pizza, and margaritas! There is such a thing as too much fitness, and I’m here to ensure you don’t cross that fine line! Just remember there’s ice cold beer and a chair on the patio for you at mile 12.5, bull creek and 39th!
