All other forms of entertainment considered, going out to eat is the one ticket everybody buys, whether it's fast-food cheap seats, big-steak luxury boxes or the chicken-fried arena seating in-between. Let American-Statesman and austin360.com restaurant critic
Mike Sutter be your all-access guide to the Central Texas dining-out scene.
In more than two decades at the Statesman, Mike's been a copy editor, Sunday editor, Page 1 designer and, for the past 14 years, XL art director. But after more than 700 XL covers, nine XL Dining Guides, managing the hundreds of listings in our restaurant database and writing stories about doughnuts, Vietnam and the Incredible Hulk, he'll finally be able to put his nine years of fancy restaurant job experience (thank you, drive through) to good use. This means he can write about trailer tacos on South Lamar, $250 anniversary dinners at Hudson's, smoking a cigar with Michael Moriarty at Louie's 106, brewing his own Anderson's Coffee stout beer and freeloading at kids-eat-free nights all over town.
Go out and sample what Mike Sutter recommends in his Great Dishes Gowalla trip.

Kerbey Lane Cafe will relocate its South Lamar Boulevard location later this year to a new spot three blocks away with twice as much space.
In addition to extra room for diners, the move to the Corners shopping center, 3005 S. Lamar Blvd., will allow for a bigger kitchen, patio dining and extra parking.
Employees will be added, as well.
“We’ve been at our current location for 25 years now,” said Allison Bright, the restaurant’s marketing director. “We’re bursting at the seams.”

Is this the location that had the albino frog in the aquarium? I don’t live in Austin, I live in Florida. Every time i go to Austin I go to your restaurant off MLK and the one off 183. I think I was at this location years ago with the albino frog. Elizabeth

Glad to hear this, Kerbey Lane is a great place to eat. In this economic climate it’s nice to know they’re still successful.

SO glad they’re doing this, yet still staying in the same area. Odd to me, though - considering start-up/remodel costs - why they didn’t nab one of the recently vacated former restaurant spots. Hope they add a full-bar to the menu, same as their other locations.

albino Frog? 1. There’s no Kerbey Lane off MLK. 2. The location off 183 is in North, north West Austin. This location is South. I know nothing of an Albino Frog at any location. I’ve been to them all, but never knew to look for frogs.

Maybe they will clean the bathroom in this location, but I doubt it.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE “OLD” KERBEY? IT USED TO SELL CFS, FRIED CHICKEN, ETC. I WENT TO THE STORE ON 183 LAST WEEK AND WAS DISAPPOINTED IN THE “HIPPIE” FOOD ON THE MENU. MY WIFE’S QUESADILLA WAS THIN WITH VIRTUALLY NOTHING INSIDE. IT WAS DRY AND TASTELESS. I HAD TWO TACOS AND WAS ALSO DISAPPOINTED. I COULDA DONE BETTER SOMEPLACE FOR FAR LESS MONEY.

Chill Johnny, if you want CFS that won’t disappoint go to “The Broken Spoke.” But, if you need to take a dump, for any reason while you are there, walk over to where Alligator Grill used to be. Don’t ask why, just trust me.

Could someone please explain the appeal of this place? They must survive on reputation. I’ve eaten there two times in past year and the food is average at best. The wait staff is aloof, the price of food is a little on the high side. What’s happen to quality of food and service. This place doesn’t have it.

I agree with Brian. The food is good, but not exceptional. I ate at the Wm. Cannon location a few months ago, and the service was slow. I sat at the bar, and the waitstaff was constantly returning the food to the kitchen for one reason or another.

This is the location of the old Blockbuster, next to the Rockin’ Tomato Pizzaa.
The Old Alligator Grill location is now a Baker Street Pub.

Hate to see them moving the restaurant to a new location. The current location has such a unique personality. I’m afraid that will be lost in the shuffle.

From the picture, it definitely appears to be the recently vacated Blockbuster Video which sits next to Rockin’ Tomato (one of the best pizza buffets in town) and Baker St. (ex-Alligator Grill). Suffice to say, this building would have far less character than the old place, but, on the plus side, restaurant and parking space would obviously be improved.
Torchy’s opened a location in the same strip center not too long ago. Drove by last month, but ultimately decided it was too lifeless and chain-lookingesque for our liking and headed to the one on 1st instead. Hopefully, KL doesn’t offer up the same impression.
