All other forms of entertainment considered, going out to eat is the one ticket everybody buys, whether it's fast-food cheap seats, big-steak luxury boxes or the chicken-fried arena seating in-between. Let American-Statesman and austin360.com restaurant critic
Mike Sutter be your all-access guide to the Central Texas dining-out scene.
In more than two decades at the Statesman, Mike's been a copy editor, Sunday editor, Page 1 designer and, for the past 14 years, XL art director. But after more than 700 XL covers, nine XL Dining Guides, managing the hundreds of listings in our restaurant database and writing stories about doughnuts, Vietnam and the Incredible Hulk, he'll finally be able to put his nine years of fancy restaurant job experience (thank you, drive through) to good use. This means he can write about trailer tacos on South Lamar, $250 anniversary dinners at Hudson's, smoking a cigar with Michael Moriarty at Louie's 106, brewing his own Anderson's Coffee stout beer and freeloading at kids-eat-free nights all over town.

Taking my 10-year-old for an after-soccer Chick-fil-A yesterday, I saw that the Lion & Rose British Restaurant & Pub is working on a location in the West Lake Hills shopping center that houses the H-E-B Westlake Market and a Barnes & Noble.
The space at 701 Capital of Texas Highway, Building M, used to house Ruggles Grill (and a few other places before that).
The Lion & Rose is a San Antonio operation with four locations there, serving English pub food (bangers and mash, fish and chips, Scotch eggs, shepherd’s pie) and a menu of steaks, salads and sandwiches.
And where the Lion roams, the European draft beer will follow.
No word on when the Lion & Rose will open in West Lake, but at the pace the remodeling is going and how focused the general contractor seems, I’m crossing my fingers for early November.

Hmm… Interesting choice for West Lake. I had high hopes for that space. I guess we will see.

If it is where I think it is it may not survive and if it does I will be shocked. I have seen the beginning of the village and nothing stays long next to barnes and noble. The longest was Tia’s Mexican Restraunt. I miss Coyote Grill renamed four corners.

This is a great pub in San Antonio. I have been to the one in Alamo Heights on several occasions and the service is good and the food is great! Almost as good as Fado’s. I hope it does well and sticks around!
