Could the “Cake Ball” be the next cupcake?

Ever on the lookout for the next big thing in trailer-borne desserts, Austinites can now flock to Holy Cacao, a South Austin trailer specializing in the “Cake Ball”: a globe of batter and frosting mounted on a stick Popsicle-style and dipped in chocolate, with varieties like dark chocolate (“Holly’s Favorite”), red velvet, wedding cake (with white chocolate), Grasshopper (with chocolate mint) and the inevitably entendre-ful “Brass” (peanut butter and chocolate). All for $1.50 each.

If you prefer your chocolate intravenously, Holy Cacao offers hot “drinking chocolate” ($4), which the menu promises is not made from syrup or mix and can be ordered in dark or Mexican chocolate. Another liquid option is a “Cake Shake,” a $5 vanilla or chocolate shake with a cake ball tossed in.
(Holy Cacao is at 1207 S. First St. The Web site is www.theholycacao.com. Delivery and shipping are available by calling 323-6671, or e-mailing orders@theholycacao.com.)

‘Endless Summer’ at Kahuna’s

What better way to kick off a surf-themed restaurant than by helping a kid go to Hawaii? On Sunday (March 29) from 4 to 7 p.m., Kahuna’s Tiki Bar & Grill (6301 Parmer Lane, 336-7873, www.kahunastikibar.com) will celebrate its grand opening by helping the Make-A-Wish Foundation send a gravely ill girl named Bridget to Hawaii with a $1,000 donation.
To help, Kahuna’s is bringing in “Endless Summer” surf-movie icon Robert August to meet Bridget, sign autographs and pour his own line of wines. The event will include surf music by the band Los Super Avengers, a chance to taste Kahuna’s range of island cocktails, along with free conch fritters and pulled-pork sliders.
(Kahuna’s is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday-Saturday.)
