All other forms of entertainment considered, going out to eat is the one ticket everybody buys, whether it's fast-food cheap seats, big-steak luxury boxes or the chicken-fried arena seating in-between. Let American-Statesman and austin360.com restaurant critic
Mike Sutter be your all-access guide to the Central Texas dining-out scene.
In more than two decades at the Statesman, Mike's been a copy editor, Sunday editor, Page 1 designer and, for the past 14 years, XL art director. But after more than 700 XL covers, nine XL Dining Guides, managing the hundreds of listings in our restaurant database and writing stories about doughnuts, Vietnam and the Incredible Hulk, he'll finally be able to put his nine years of fancy restaurant job experience (thank you, drive through) to good use. This means he can write about trailer tacos on South Lamar, $250 anniversary dinners at Hudson's, smoking a cigar with Michael Moriarty at Louie's 106, brewing his own Anderson's Coffee stout beer and freeloading at kids-eat-free nights all over town.

Ever on the lookout for the next big thing in trailer-borne desserts, Austinites can now flock to Holy Cacao, a South Austin trailer specializing in the “Cake Ball”: a globe of batter and frosting mounted on a stick Popsicle-style and dipped in chocolate, with varieties like dark chocolate (“Holly’s Favorite”), red velvet, wedding cake (with white chocolate), Grasshopper (with chocolate mint) and the inevitably entendre-ful “Brass” (peanut butter and chocolate). All for $1.50 each.
Run by Ellen Kinsey and John Spillyards, the bright Holy Cacao trailer is tucked perpendicular to John Galindo’s big blue Izzoz Tacos trailer on South First Street. Other delights on the menu include the $2.50 “S’Mores on a Stick,” (at right) a handmade marshmallow dipped in chocolate and rolled in graham-cracker crumbs. The marshmallows can be bought individually for 50 cents.
If you prefer your chocolate intravenously, Holy Cacao offers hot “drinking chocolate” ($4), which the menu promises is not made from syrup or mix and can be ordered in dark or Mexican chocolate. Another liquid option is a “Cake Shake,” a $5 vanilla or chocolate shake with a cake ball tossed in.
(Holy Cacao is at 1207 S. First St. The Web site is www.theholycacao.com. Delivery and shipping are available by calling 323-6671, or e-mailing orders@theholycacao.com.)

I concur with Lynne, Ellen’s cake balls are fantastic! My wife and I stopped by the Holy Cacao trailer on Thursday and had a great time chatting with her. So far, my favorite is the brass cake ball; much better than any other peanut butter and chocolate concoction that I’ve found (at least to my taste buds).

The cake balls are unbelievable!!!! The peanut butter is like a super rich reeese”s cup on a stick, even better thank a reese’s. Hollys is the richest chocolate on a stick you will ever experience. If you have a sweettooth for chocolate, THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO!!!

Thanks Austin 360 for the great reviews! We love that cake balls are taking off in Austin. We use only the freshest ingredients and make ALL our products daily. We hope that Austinites will come on down and give us a try for themselves! Unlike some VERY expensive dessert options, we believe that we are bringing Cake Balls to the people! You don’t have a minimum order and can feel free to order just ONE to try for yourself! Also, we deliver anywhere in town for just $3 (or FREE for orders of 6 dozen or more). Thanks for keeping Austin weird and supporting local businesses!

I LOVE Cake by Bridges Cake balls… I find that not only are they the freshest cakeballs I’ve had, but each cakeball has unique flavor that sets it apart from any other cake place I’ve tried. AND…they are so pretty and elegant, that I’ve served them at fancy parties (a friend of mine used them at her wedding reception) as well as family get togethers. Love them!! :)

I hate to say it folks but there is yet another company that does Cake balls and they are out of this world!!! Lots of flavors to choose and much tastier than either one of these companies. Cakes by bridges, loved the art on the bites but need more flavor. Try Cake Bite Delights, they are OUT OF THIS WORLD….may not be as fancy but if you want flavor, check them out. I think they are online and they deliver too! Yeah, Cake balls!!

Holy Cacao is funky and very Austin. Love it. When in Dallas, though, you should try visiting the home of the cake ball. The Cake Ball Company (www.cakeballs.com) starting selling cake balls three years ago, and they are absolutely fantastic… a little more “high toned”, but fabulous. They have perfected the art of the cake ball!

We get it; you like Cake by Bridges! Can I go there after lunch and pick up a cake ball? No, I have to order a whole bunch of them and wait a day? OK, so it’s not really serving the same purpose as Holy Cacao, now is it? I haven’t tried anyone’s cake balls yet, but I was irritated by the hijacking of this comment board by another company. Get a storefront and then you can compete for my cake ball dollar. Holy Cacao, I’ll see you this week for a cake ball and a s’more on a stick!

I agree with Val. The great thing about Holy Cacao is that I can take my son to get something a little different and just ONE or TWO. If I can find a reason to need a catering order or an awesome, quirky full-size cake, I’ll be sure to go to Bridges. Until then, I’ll be the cool mom and co-worker taking everyone to have just one or two delicious cake balls. Maybe Bridges should have started selling them in a store front before HC did.
