The Linkdown for Friday, June 3

The Linkdown would never defame anyone on this blog because he might be forced to write 100 blog entries to make up for it, a similar punishment to that of a Malaysian man who must Tweet again and again.
Other online stuff you should know about:
- The W Hotel threw a party in Austin last night to celebrate the launch of its official hotel app. (I did not go, but I’m betting it was swanky.)
- Richard Garriott’s social gaming company Portalarium gets a $2.4 million cash infusion.
- Groupon has filed for an IPO. Wonder if their SEC filings are as amusing as their deal copy.
- The makers of the racing MMO “Need for Speed World” say they’ve already attracted 5 million players.
- Thursday, June 23rd, is the date for the next Austin High Tech Happy Hour. Tickets appear to already be going fast.
- Oh, Sony! It looks like their movie division has been breached by hackers. We could say that Sony doesn’t seem to be locking things down properly across the board, but we won’t.
- The HeliOS Project, which works to bring computers to disadvantaged kids, is having a grand opening on Saturday.
- CapMac Users Group is competing for 100 Drobo data storage devices. Find out how to vote for them here.
- iPad-friendly visual thinking classes coming up on June 9.
- Dachis Group has formed an Social Business Council.
- On Monday, Nintendo 3DS owners will get an update that adds an online store and a free copy of an “Excitebike” game! Free Wi-Fi access at 25,000 locations is also in the cards.
- Selling/buying a car? You’ve got app options.
- Google’s +1 has launched.
- Hacks/Hackers Austin meeting on Tuesday: “Integrating Tech Skills in Your Communications Career.”
- What’s new in AMD’s chips for tablets. (Mmm, that sounds tasty with some salsa.)
- Locally developed app “100 Cameras in 1” for iPhone/iPad can now send photos to Instagram.
- The “Life in a Day” video project is finally appearing as a finished film soon.
- Barkr, another deal service, has debuted in Austin. It’s currently invite-only.
- Apple’s iWork apps for iPad are now compatible with iPhones and iPod Touches as well. Free if you already bought the iPad versions.
- Late addition: an Austin launch party for the “Tron: Legacy” pinball machine at Pinballz Arcade on Saturday, June 11.
