The Linkdown for Thursday, March 31
The Linkdown would probably be normally be posting it tomorrow, but that’s April Fool’s Day and everyone knows you shouldn’t believe anything on the Internet on April 1.
Here’s what’s up online:
- As we mentioned earlier today, Sony Online Entertainment is laying off 205 company-wide. We don’t yet know how (or if) the Austin studio is impacted.
- Cisco and MobileMonday Americas are presenting an enterprise apps demo night. It’s on Monday and it’s free.
- The FCC is giving away 10,000 wireless-N routers as part of a broadband test. You can check it out and see if you qualify.
- Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is not entirely complimentary in his recollections of working with Bill Gates.
- Dell’s head of global marketing for enterprise seems strangely misinformed about iPad pricing (and whether or not it uses a mouse).
- Speaking of Dell, they may be the first computer company to sell a Spanish-language keyboard option on its computers in the U.S.
- Remember when Austin was trying to get gigabit Internet access from Google? Kansas City, Kan. got it instead. But all hope is not lost.
- Android Homecoming Event is announced for Mountain View, Calif. in September. A $5,000 developer challenge kicks off next week.
- BigAustin Big Idea Day is coming up at the end of April.
- Manor 5th grader Rhys Wynn Wilkinson is a winner in the national STEM Videogame Design Challenge. Congrats!
- PC Magazine is not feeling the love for Austin-based Gowalla’s app.
- Amazon introduced a cloud music service this week, ahead of Apple and Google.
- Firefox 4 browser for Android can sync with your desktop browser.
- GoDaddy CEO Bob Parsons has riled up Twitter by boasting that he killed an elephant.
- TEDxAustin is posting videos from this year’s event on YouTube.
- Computer Club of Austin has a meeting Tuesday on the social future of IT.
- Panel on video game writing takes place at UT on Friday (April 1).
- Flickr adds more sharing options, including Facebook. (FINALLY!)
- Google’s answer to Facebook’s “Like” button is “+1.”

- MySpace lost 10 million users from January to February.
