After a
short delay and some opening day glitches, it looks like the South by Southwest
Interactive Panel Picker for the 2011 fest is up and running. On Twitter and Facebook, the requests for votes have already been frequent and many.
But what can you really say about your panel in 140 characters (including link and title)? Just like we did last year, we’re offering a place in the comments for this post for you, the panel organizer, helper or panelist, to tell us why people should vote for your Interactive panel. Feel free to link directly to the panel and give us your hardest sell. Want to see how it’s done? Take a look at last year’s pimpery or this Facebook group specifically devoted to the topic.
If you post comments replying to any of these, please be respectful and stay on topic.
So, here we go. The Second-Annual Pimp Your SXSW Interactive Panel Picker. Take it away!

I hope you will consider checking out my panel and voting and commenting as you see fit. It's titled, "What Your Facebook Profile *Really* Says About You" and is backed up by the research of Sam Gosling, a professor of psychology at UT-Austin and author of "Snoop: What Your Stuff Says About You". Thank you!

Social Location Marketing is the latest in a long line of Social Media "shiny new objects" but is it really relevant to marketers? Can they convert Checkin's to cash? Which platforms work best for which markets and how does all this sharing benefit the customer? Attendees will leave knowing why they should be including this in their marketing mix, how to construct a scalable Social Location Marketing campaign and where all this is likely to go next.

Vote for thePlatform’s panel now - http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/ideas/view/8051
We have the inside dope and the data to back up how the leading video sites on the web are drawing viewers and building audiences.
“What makes your user-generated content great? It’s the users. If they like it, they’ll come and stick around. So if they like what they see and you’ve got a high number of video views, how do make that work for your business?
First, you have to realize that building an audience and monetizing UGC doesn’t require a special strategy, because everything your content business puts out into the world already comes from a socially-oriented vantage point. Uh-oh; you mean you don’t have that mindset? Okay, that’s a problem. You can’t expect people to engage and share if everything you do doesn’t give them a reason to care.
During this panel, we’ll talk about why a user-focused approach is the best foundation for UGC campaign success. We’ll discuss transparency of ads and sponsorships, balancing content and ads, good design, and how UGC sites with large, naturally engaged audiences can build on their success.”

My SXSW panel proposal is called "What Comic Books Can Teach Mobile Application Designers"
You can view and vote for it here: http://www.bit.ly/sxswanjuan
By the way, please leave a comment if you vote for my panel so I can have an idea of how many votes I'm getting!
During my panel, I'll explore the ways that the language of comic books can be applied to design principles for mobile applications. For example, the covers of comic books are meant to draw your eye, entice you to flip through one, and hopefully make a purchase. Similarly, the icons of mobile apps are meant to draw your eye, entice you to install one (assuming a free version is available), and hopefully purchase the full version. In both cases the process begins with a picture.
I'll build on the ideas that comic book legend Will Eisner shared in his landmark 1985 book, "Comics and Sequential Art", which presented the science of comic books. During my panel, I'll show how a mobile app built with comic book design principles can evoke the same positive emotions that people feel when they read their favorite comic books.
If you want a slightly more detailed explanation of my SXSW panel proposal, you can read about it on my blog at:

Tweets from September 11
This panel will explore the emerging and historic role of social networks in disseminating news and information during disasters and other significant national and international events. It will also attempt to assess how differently the events of 9/11 would have been reported if Twitter and Facebook had been introduced to the world ten years earlier. With smartphones and handheld video cameras in the hands of thousands of people on the scene, would conspiracy theories and unanswered questions still swirl around Ground Zero? Would the events have changed at all, or their aftermath be different? In the context of these and other questions, we will speculate on how future disasters will be reported.

"You're Dead, Your Data Isn't: What Happens Now?" will bring in cultural, technical, legal and entrepreneurial experts to talk about what happens to your digital content and profiles after you die.
If we are going to be a digital culture, then we need to figure out what happens to our digital identities after death. We'll talk about what digital legacies might look like and the issues that we need to address in order to make them a reality. Oh, of course we'll talk about Twitter's new death policy, too.

Mine is called: Hollywood Lessons: What FIlm School Didn't Teach Me
It's a bunch of young film industry professionals who are relatively recent film school graduates discussing the transition from film school to the industry, from having film be a hobby to a profession. We'll discuss how to get a job, how to make a living working in film, what goals your short/first feature should have. It combines former Austinites, people from very different film schools, and people from NY and LA to give different perspectives on how to make things work. It will be a valuable panel for all of UT's film program and people who are looking to transition into the film business.

http://budurl.com/IE6isDead
We'll celebrate the death of Internet Explorer 6, complete with eulogies, song, dance and possibly a shooting booth for people to peg IE6 with paint balls.
You'll walk away with ideas to pitch to your IT team to encourage new technology. We'll show you the difference in capabilities between various web browsers, including some examples of what is to come with HTML 5 and CSS3.
(Sounds boring, but our presentations are lively, fast, fun and filled with visuals and ideas).

Thanks for opening this up! Here's the panel: http://bit.ly/bpJDlx
and here's the pitch: Whether we realize it or not, everything we interact with is increasingly becoming personalized. Facebook's instant personalization brought the issue of "how much is too much" front and center. This panel talks about how to handle and use the increasing amount of information we know about users to create personalized experiences, without crossing the line into creepiness.

Pimping 2 awesome panels here:
1. Fire Your Marketers, Hire Your Coolest Customers (http://bit.ly/bl3Cnu)
Who do you trust more: marketers or actual customers? Some companies actually get it--they know you neither care nor trust what they say about themselves. So they've shut up and let their customers do the talking. We'll show you how to make it happen for your company.
2. A Social Workplace: Foundations that Work for E-Commerce (http://bit.ly/dcRSfh) Feat. Elizabeth Weil of Twitter
Let's face it: Most companies plain suck at social media. They'll hire a sleazy guru "consultant", or nervously hand the keys of their Facebook page to an intern. Not necessary. Not effective. Companies need to dedicate the right resources and personnel to see returns, and build the right teams and strategies internally. If you want to know how, vote for this panel. Plus, I'll be on it :-)
Thanks, Austin!

I work for a local SEO firm called The Search Engine Guys, LLC and we have proposed a Panel Picker presentation called, " Hey, Your Company “Sucks”! Online Reputation Management Basics". The purpose of the presentation is to help companies defend themselves against online attacks by using advanced SEO techniques. With consumer review sites and social networks becoming more influential and pervasive than ever, we think this would be great info for any company who has experienced this kind of event or wants to arm themselves against one in the future.
