iOS 4.0 live, ready for iPhone/iPod Touch updating

scaled.jpg

Three days before the iPhone 4 is released, the new OS update for existing iPhone and iPod Touch devices is already out. iOS 4.0, as it’s being called, is a major operating system update that works with all iPhones and iPod Touches except the first-gen iPod Touch (the one without Bluetooth) and the first iPhone (the one without 3G).

You’ll need to download and install iTunes 9.2 in order to fetch the update.

Features that are new in today’s update include multitasking (shown in action above), which allows you to run audio and voice-over-IP apps (like Pandora and Skype) in the background while you do other things. You’ve also got a much-desired feature, folders, which allows you to better organize apps. You drag one app over another and a folder (already named based on what the apps are) is created.

You’ll now be able to change the home screen wallpaper (please do: the default raindrop setting is ugly), unified inbox for merging multiple e-mail accounts, threaded messages (similar to Gmail’s handling of messages, but not quite as functional).

You can sync Faces with iPhoto, use the new iBooks for iPhone app, create and edit playlists, use a Bluetooth keyboard and lock the screen orientation (similar to the lock switch on an iPad). Some devices will support “Tap to focus” on video recording and a 5x digital zoom option on photos.

More on the new features here.

The download is about 378 MB and could take you more than an hour to download depending on how busy the servers gets. You should also set aside an hour or two for your device to update. Make sure you won’t need your phone or iPod for a while if you plan to upgrade today.

Richard -- true.

3G iPhone gets a lot of the other features, too (iBooks, e-mail improvements, playlists), but multitasking is a no-go.

Not all IOS 4.0 features are available for iPhone 3G like, multitasking! The only thing the 3G gained was the ability to make folders.

I was hoping that there would be some tweaks between the Golden Master we all installed and this official release, because I have been experiencing some battery drain issues on my 3G device, but they seem to be identical. Thursday and my iPhone 4 can't come fast enough.
