BREAKING: Time Warner Cable changes terms of tiers

Remember that day off I was talking about? Yeah. So… Time Warner Cable has just released a statement redefining some of the terms of its upcoming broadband tiers in Austin, San Antonio and other markets.

The major changes:

  • The tiers will begin in Rochester, N.Y. and Greensboro, N.C. in August before they hit San Antonio/Austin in October. That’s later than what we were expecting here.
  • The 100 GB “super-tier” will cost $75. It will be the same speed as the Turbo tier.
  • Caps have been adjusted a bit to “10, 20, 40 and 60 GB for Road Runner Lite, Basic, Standard and Turbo packages, respectively.”
  • Overage charges will be capped at $75. Noted in the statement is that the max a “super-tier” customer would pay is $150 for unlimited Internet. However, that speed now at unlimited usage costs about $55, so I’m not sure that nearly tripling your bill for unlimited access is cause for dancing in the streets.
  • A new 1 GB tier will cost $15 a month. Curiously, overage charges for that tier will be $2 per GB, not $1. That seems a bit strange.
  • “As we launch DOCSIS 3.0 in the trial markets, we plan to offer a 50/5 MB speed tier for $99 per month.” No word on the usage cap for that. 100 GB? 60?
  • No lunch comparisons this time. Now I kind of miss that.

I’d love to offer a deeper analysis, but I’m home and my daughter needs a bath. Feel free to hash it out yourselves in the comments.

I called DirectV today and have an installer coming out Monday. I've also called ordered ATT DSL. From readings ATT won't be introducing any caps for at least a year...meanwhile people should file an anti-trust complain with the FTC. So long time warner. I hope everyone else out there does the same and stops giving their money to TWC ASAP. That's the best statement you can make.

Just add my name to the list of people leaving TWC if this actually comes to be here in Austin.

They already got rid of some cool channels like IFC and Sundance. And then they had issues with KXAN. And their HD channels have some inconsistency. WTF are they thinking?

Even if it hurts, cancel TW and go with another company for internet service. They need to be sent a message that the 1990's are over and that we are not paying for Internet by the hour or by the bit. I have been a roadrunner customer since 12/1998. I am not paying TW 3 times what I am paying now for the same internet access. I switched to U-verse on Thursday, and TW is getting canceled today. Whoever thought up this a TW should be fired. TW is not doing this to save their customers money, it is to make themselves more.

The straw that broke the camel's back. Time Warner is attempting to shutdown online content providers and in doing so are gouging the hell out of their customer base. I hope this comes back to bite the hell out of them, and that cocky [mildly naught word] Alex Dudley. What a pompous and arrogant fool.

I'll cancel TWC. TWC needs to kill or control the Internet and so do the broadcasters and newspapers. They only see the free Web as a way to get people hooked on the service.

Does anyone remember when there were no commercials on "pay TV" because subscriber fees took the place of them? It was a big selling point in early days of cable. Now we pay to watch commercials.

This is bad idea looking for a solution from another company. The last thing I need to do is now worry about going over my "minutes" on my Internet and getting raped with crazy charges. It is poor customer service like one would expect from an airline, or a utility.

$200+ a month and my service on the cable TV goes out at least onece a week requiring a rest on my tuning adapter...give me a reason to switch to someone else. I'm already almost there.

I sure hope AT&T has gotten their stuff together. When I offered them my business last time, they failed to be able to reach my house. I hope I have an alternative to TW soon!

TWC Austin email address is ctx.a.support@twcable.com Please flood their inbox with your desire to terminate service as soon as the new tiered pricing takes effect. The only way TWC is going to wake up to their dumb decisions is to speak to them with your wallets!!!!

I switched to Grande this week. $109 less revenue per month for TWC, and I couldn't be happier. I should've done it a year ago.

Grande gets a 10 out of 10 so far, even though the install took 4 hrs because they had to string the cable all the way down the block on the telephone poles.

Can someone tell me how to measure how much internet I use. This would be useful in determining which plan to buy, if any. Also, I need to figure out how to stop my friends from sending me those multi-megabyte videos that are mostly junk. Maybe their ISP will make it enough too expensive for them to stop sending that junk.

I encourage all to submit your advance termination notices NOW so they can see just how head up but their tactics are... Bet they will back peddle very quickly once they see just how much cable and phone service they will lose as well... Will be interesting to watch this all unfold and then fold up...

Earthlink apparently *is* Time Warner and vice versa. VP of Public Relations at Time Warner Alex Dudley has said that Earthlink internet *will* be capped.

April 9, 2009 10:53 PM | Link to this

With this non-announcement announcement of the "trial" TWC has paved the way for all other HSI providers to either undercut their ridiculous pricing, or simply to offer no cap service. If I was a stockholder, I'd be shorting this pig.

Let's see...I have 6 mpbs DSL with no monthly equipment charge and no cap at $35 per month. If I'm an idiot, I can get the TWC bargain package, one-eighth the speed for half the price, IF I don't go over 1GB per month, or I can get 40% more download speed (rated speed that is, at least when the kiddies aren't home from school choking my neighborhood router node with Barney porn) for twice the price and a 100GB cap. Yeah right. I'm gonna leap at that opportunity.

That giant sucking sound you hear is the air going out of the monopoly balloon.

By Tom

April 9, 2009 10:52 PM | Link to this

Consumers need to threaten to go to ditch TWC and go to whatever competitor still offers unlimited internet. If NO competitor offers unlimited internet, we should consider cutting off cable and internet ENTIRELY for as long as necessary. Why not? I can live without cable and I somehow survived before the internet was invented. And most people can still surf a bit at work, if needed.

Now that I have emailed my disconnect notice to terminate my service effective with the very first new billing which I calculate to be January 2010, I am getting replies back from them telling me how sorry they are and that my issue will have to be escalated and additional research done. I also addressed again the LOSS of usenet which they did away with in June of last year with NO NOTICE to their subscribers. At that time, I asked several times for a bill adjustment as I now had to pay a 3rd party 10 bucks a month for the service they took away and NO ONE EVER REPLIED. I should have bailed back then but I continued to let them draft my account each month. BUT, this cap crap is the final nail in the coffin and I am DONE with them. AT&T IS an option for me and there is a central office close by so it is now very usable for my area. Grande service is just up the street from me and I have emailed them asking how much longer till they serve my street. Yes, I would rather have Grande and would have switched to them years ago if they served my street. Been waiting on them to do so and continued to pay TWC while doing so. BUT, if I have to go AT&T, will do just for the satisfaction that TWC will not get my $$$....

I have 3 services with TW: Digital Cable, Internet and Phone. Guess what's going to happen when this internet tiered pricing goes into effect? They're losing all 3 services from me. They think that they are making/saving money but they'll lose money on their other services.

By Dave

April 9, 2009 10:30 PM | Link to this

TW's obvious (and counterproductive) strategy is to discourage downloading of TV programs and movies from competitive services such as iTunes, Hulu, the TV networks, etc., which are making their cable TV service irrelevant. Streaming is the clear trend for video delivery and TW stands to be a big loser when we no longer need cable TV. Well, as soon as they make the move to tier my internet service they'll not only lose me as a Roadrunner customer, but I'll be moving to an alternative cable TV provider, too. At least as long as cable TV is viable. Hello, AT&T!

To all the angry people threatening to move to AT&T U-Verse, sorry to burst your bubble, but they are also moving to tiered broadband. The ONLY Austin provider that isn't moving to tiered broadband is Grande.

I got AT&T U-verse about 2 months ago after being a TWC customer forever, and I LOVE U-VERSE. Besides being able to watch recordings on any TV in the house, you can get voicemails and schedule recordings from any computer. I've got my cell and home phones tied into the same mailbox, so a message on either shows on both. And I can record up to 4 shows at a time. No reason for "live" TV at all anymore. U-verse is great, and I highly recommend it.

Why would you want to do this? Is it for more money to TWC. I believe that you will lose a lot of your customers, and they will look for a new carriers.

This is only the beginning - TWC made a mistake moving this out of the boonies (sorry beaumont). Many of the markets they are trying this in are reacting very negatively. Congressman in NY is introducing legislation to prevent this from occurring. Greensborough is opening the market up, austin city council is getting involved. This will not see the light of day.

So, have they said what will happen to us who are on the 2 year price lock guarantee? I have Road Runner Turbo (22 down, 2 up) for about $50 a month locked in for the next 18 months and I'd be happy to just stick with that until my contract is up. I'm happy with the speed and let me tell you, I probably download close to 100GB a month. If you jack up my rate after my two years is over, I'll leave.

By KH

April 9, 2009 8:57 PM | Link to this

This is still a screw job. It's a ripoff pure and simple. TWC says they "had to" do this because about 5% of the Internet users burn up so much bandwidth they cause everyone else's access to suffer, so they had to raise prices to protect our access from that 5%. We're supposed to believe that TWC couldn't identify those 5% and do something to them alone without affecting our prices? We're supposed to believe that TWC was forced against their will to jack up EVERYBODY'S prices? [Very naughty word!] This is a monolopy pricing ripoff pure and simple. TWC should be hit with a class action suit for violating the Sherman Antitrust Act.

If they actually institute these caps in Austin I will be begging ATT to take my money. The only reason I haven't already left is that I want to be sure my leaving will be counted among those that will leave when the capping starts. Of course ATT blows too - I have no doubts about that. What we need is competition.

I have just placed my disconnect notice with TWC and I hope MANY others follow. As I see it from the above link to the release, it looks like January will actually be when the new rates hit after giving users a chance to see their use and right-size their account. I am going to right-size my account by speaking with my $$$$$ by telling them NO THANKS!!

It's a pretty interesting plan:
Say you're going to set ridiculously low caps, people focus on the size of the caps. Then up them and people become complacent. They're plan all along was to up the caps so people would feel they're not getting screwed.

This is what happens when a monopoly exists. I'm canceling my service as soon as the DSL is turned on. Sure it's less than half the speed, but at least they're not effectively charging $3/GB. At that rate, streaming a movie from Netflix is more expensive than renting from RedBox.

Time Warner Cable sucks! We will be rid of them as soon as our contract up. It took them at least three or four repair people to get the cable up and running at our house when we first moved in - and they charged us for all of the extra work - even though it was their fault that it wasn't wired correctly in the first place. A TWC "contractor" hooked up our modem on a splitter - when it should have been wired separately. When I called to complain that it wasn't working, I was placed on hold for over one hour - yes OVER ONE HOUR. The only reason why I remained on hold is because I wasn't doing anything else at that time, and just listened to the music on my speaker phone until finally a woman from some place in South America who spoke broken English answered the phone. She was not very helpful at all. I ended up having to call back the next day. We're moving on to Grande! See ya TWC - wouldn't want to be ya!

Let's see. First Time Warner (TW) removed a useful channel (NOAA weather radar) to Digital only. No decrease in my cable bill. Next, they moved KLRU-2 to digital only. No decrease in my cable bill. Then they removed the program listing channel. No decrease on my bill. Clearly done to 'encourage' migration to pricier cable packages. Now they want to increase profits on the internet end by imposing a tiered internet usage. It should be incumbent upon TW to provide a free usage monitor so that subscribers can determine their current monthly usage and subscribe to a plan that matches that usage. Oh, and how about a smart cable modem I can set to sever the connection to TW when it hits a pre-set limit (manual override available, of course). I cannot wait for Verizon FIOS to get to Dripping Springs, then adios, TW.
