Guest post: first impressions from a U-verse customer

Given that some Time Warner customers might be a little — is “peeved” the right word? — that they might be losing 19 channels tonight, it’s natural that some of them might be looking at other services right now.

All over Twitter today, I’m hearing about people exploring other options like Grande, Dish or just forgoing cable altogether and seeking out their favorite shows online instead.

Dale Roe, who is our features design guru, family movie critic and all-around tech-savvy smart guy, sent me an e-mail offering his first impressions of AT&T’s U-Verse TV service, which he just had installed yesterday. His family previously had service with Dish for TV and AT&T for Internet. Here’s what he had to say about his experiences so far:

  • Download and upload is definitely faster than it was with our old AT&T service (checked this by downloading a few things from iTunes Music Store and uploading to my FTP server). Browsing and connecting to Internet seems snappier, especially on our iPod Touches.
  • On-screen TV program guide is going to take some getting used to. With Dish Network, I could set up multiple favorites lists. With U-verse, as far as I can tell, there is only the ability to make one. Also, Dish Network would let me create a list that was only those channels I subscribed to with just one button push; U-verse doesn’t seem to have any option for creating a list of only those channels I subscribe to (except for selecting channels one by one out of some 400 and saving it as my one and only favorites list).
  • Phone quality seems fine and we haven’t seen any slowdown on any devices with 2-3 TV streams running as well as gaming systems and handheld devices. Of course, we’re not running HD, which would eat up a lot more of our bandwidth.
  • Volume on TV sets is problematic. On one TV I hooked wall to U-verse box to DVD to TV. On another, it’s wall to U-verse box to VCR to TV. Each successive device chained in makes the audio signal to the TV weaker, which is just strange. The result is that you have to turn the volume WAY up on the TV to get decent sound and then you pick up some audible static-y noise, which is annoying.
  • With Dish Network, we had two TVs hooked up to DVR. With U-verse we have three. BUT … with Dish, I could initiate recordings and pause/rewind live TV on either DVR TV. With U-verse, all recording has to be set up from the main TV, and only that TV can pause or rewind a live signal. That is a major bummer. On the plus side, we have the ability to record four shows at once; we used to only be able to do two. Then again, I can’t ever remember when I’ve wanted to record four shows at once.
  • On the plus plus side, U-verse’s bundle is much cheaper than my old AT&T/Dish Network service combined.

Using HDMI connection from Uverse receiver to Pansonicc plasma TV. Audio via RCA cables to a Sony surround sound system. Everything worked great. Then added a bluray splayer connectod via the surround system with RGB and RCA audio cables. Surround system now has annoying 60Hz hum. Hum stops when video RGB cables are disconnected from the TV or the incoming coax is disconned from the Uverse box. Anyone have suggestions?

I had Uverse for over a year and the service sucks. Incompetent techs that come out and give excuses as to why there is pixelation and freezing (as if I had satellite all over again in a hurricane). Then the problem worsened to a complete loss of service. The techs monkeyed around, never found the source of the interemettint disconnection. Eventually they disconnected me without notice. Highly unfair and unethical business practices.

U-Verse was installed in our neighborhood a few weeks ago. Right behind the installers came the door-to-door salespeople. Their offer sounded very good: internet and TV comparable to Time Warner, but about $6 a month less, plus a $100 Visa gift card. I signed up. A few days later I called Time Warner to let them know I was canceling, and the Time Warner marketer offered to match the AT&T price. He also pointed out - correctly, I found out later - that the internet speed that I had ordered with AT&T was slower than Time Warner Roadrunner. Figuring it was not worth the hassle to change all my e-mail addresses etc, I called AT&T to cancel the order. I was switched around and after 10 minutes or so got to a marketing person. She offered to drop the price by another $14 a month, making the e-mail hassle worth it. I called Time Warner back and they matched the AT&T lower price. I called AT&T back and, again after 10 minutes of switching around, they offered to drop another $10. By that time, I had the feeling that I had been in a Mexican flea market. I asked the marketing woman why AT&T didn't offer me the lowest price to begin with, if they really wanted my business. I decided to stay with Time Warner for the time being, hoping that U-Verse and the pricing will shake out over the next year or so. Meanwhile, I got my Time Warner bill lowered roughly $20 a month without switching out equipment, or learning how to operate new remotes, or running the risk of glitches, or hassling over my e-mail address. If I learned nothing else from this experience, it was the reminder that competition is good. We need more of it.

I switched about 6 months ago, other than a while for them to find out why my internet transfer speed was bad, it has worked pretty good. Now TWC is coming around offering to give me a deal, not as good as I am getting and they lack a few things that I like, especailly watching the DVR on any tv in the house. I think TWC network is a bit better, but not enough to get me to come back. If they fix a few things, drop their prices, I might be back. I had them for years, but they would never really deal on the prices, now they want to. good to have competition in the area :)

For over 15 years, I've had various iterations of cable, the most recent being TWC and ATTDSL. $55 for expanded basic without box from TWC. It seemed the CS just got more pathetic over time. Switched to U-Verse, totally happy. Only one TV (not HD), but I often want to record 3 to 4 shows at the same time--COOL. Interesting that on the day TWC came out to disconnect, my Uverse cable was CUT. Uverse box and cable was totally out of sight. Just something to be on the watch for.

I dumped TWC for DirecTV years ago and never looked back. DirecTV has a very good selection of HD channels and the new MPEG4 encoding provides excellent picture quality, even for sports. I recently converted from DSL to U-verse for Internet (and phone) service. I am very pleased with the 10 Mbps service (AT&T now offers 18 Mbps). I might consider U-verse when my DirecTV contract runs out in a year, but at this point DirecTV has everyone beat with HDTV.

I love Uverse very much, except for the fact that my DVD function doesn't work online, because of the ATT/Yahoo interface. Every time I try to use it, I end up calling ATT, who eventually connects me to Yahoo, who ends up magically fixing it but telling me something stupid like "next time clear your cache." And the next time, it doesn't work again.

Besides that, though, it's great.

Time Warner has treated it's customers like dirt for years. U-Verse is better in all the ways mentioned in this forum. Even if it were just half as good it would be a better option than the poor service provided by Time Warner.

What about Grande? Any experience there - I've heard good things.

I tried U-Verse for a month and quite frankly, I was not impressed. There is no way that the U Verse Internet even compares to Roadrunner Turbo is speed and price.

I switched back to Time Warner and quite pleased with the ALL IN ONE bundle for $98.16 (tax & fees) for three years.

I never like SBC in the first place and my fondness for ATT is the same.

Stick with Time Warner!

How much are 30 paying for the basic TV/Phone/Internet bundle with U-verse, total with all the taxes?

Thanks.

@RR I had seen the RCA cable fix mentioned on the Internet. One of our TVs only has coax input, so that won't help there but, hey -- that might be the excuse I need to get a shiny, new flat-panel TV! I am somewhat concerned about future price hikes. I will say that that is a problem we *never* had with Dish Network. Still, AT&T seems to be evolving U-Verse rapidly, so I'm hoping we'll one day be able to pause and record from ANY DVY, and not just the main one.

We had the audio static problem and AT&T techs came and put RCA cables from box to TV instead of a coaxial cable. That fixed it. We also wanted to shut off all boxes at night to be "green" and main box ended up having to be replaced because techs said it fried because it can't handle being turned on and off a lot (picture on TV began freezing a lot for long periods of time on all TVs or broadband didn't work). We leave main box on all the time now but we were told we could turn off receivers at night or when not needed for awhile. It takes awhile for TV to be ready when they have to boot up though. Price for each receiver per month just went up and I'm not happy about that. I'm also not happy that you can't pause or record from any TV (only one w/DVR). You also can't erase from any TV, only one w/DVR. It's also been a problem getting rebate.

I have been a U-verse customer since July 2008, after 25 years with Time Warner. I could not be happier.

The quality of the service is better than I had with Time Warner. I had regular outages and pixelation with Time Warner that has been non-existent with U-verse. There is no comparison between the U-verse phone service and the digital phone service I had with Time Warner... the U-verse phone is much more reliable. Time Warner always promised to resolve our service issues, but never delivered on the promise.

I was an "All-the-best" customer at Time Warner. I had everything... TV, Internet, and phone service. My U-Verse bill (again, for the highest tier, and internet and phone) is less expensive and I have better service.

There are so many more features that are of benefit to me, like the whole home DVR, the ability to program my DVR from the internet or my cell phone, and the ability to "watch" family photos put on my Flicker account on a U-verse channel. I use all of these features regularly. The picture viewing came in handy with relatives visiting. Internet speeds have been outstanding, however I also had good internet speed with Time Warner.

The only drawbacks that I have regarding U-Verse are related to "local" identity and channel layout. The News-8, BevoD, and local Weather radar are channels to which I wish I still had access. The channel groupings (by 100-group) are less than intuitive in U-verse than they were with Time Warner, but I guess that is a small issue in the bigger picture.

I am happy with U-verse and am happy to be through with Time Warner.

I've been thinking about going to Uverse after a serious contractual fiasco with Time Warner earlier this year (they had previously guaranteed me a full year of a specific rate, but 6 months in without warning changed it on me and forced me to get into a 2 year contract with an early disconnect fee and they treated me like complete sh*t about it all that it was all MY fault)....for now the billing it fine, but I am waiting for them to spike my bill yet again and break out of their 2 year guarantee

I switched to ATT Uverse 3 weeks ago. First -overall the service seems fine with no issues. Though, the service in on regard is superior, you can record and then watch on any tv. but you can only pause, stop etc from one tv and not the others - this is a MAJOR step down from Directv and borderline deception on AT&T's part as they tell you at first you can. Secondly, it took them 4 days to get me installed and have everything working correctly. AT&T has spent a boatload of money - advertising and trying to sell people on this system - but they should have set some of that money aside for Customer Support/Service - They are by far the WORST company I have ever dealt with in this area. The want to sell you, get you hooked up - which again is problematic and then do nothing to service you once they have you - so be warned if you switch - do not expect any customer service

I have had UVerse since this summer. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Another great feature is that I can program my recordings away from home via internet. It is very convenient.

The only obstacle I encountered when I first installed UVerse is that my yard got dug up (without any warning) to replace the existing fiber optic wire. Although this was not a usual part of installation, it did cause my yard some damage. AT&T did, however, reimburse me with new grass and a free month of service.

@Jen L.: We made the same sequence of switching from company to company that you did. Re: the audio, it's a U-Verse thing. The sound issues are a direct result of adding devices between the U-Verse DVR box and the television. If I just go straight from the U-Verse DVR box into the TV, the audio is fine. The signal only weakens when I chain extra devices in. I mentioned it because it happened with two different TVs and two different chained-in devices (VCR in one instance, DVD player in the other) and two different TVs, and it did not happen with Time Warner or Dish Network. Glad your audio is working fine!

I've switched to DISH but may try U-Verse based on the comments above. Thanks for the info! (I'm a former, never-to-repeat, customer of Time Warner. They are constantly in these battles with channel providers and I've grown weary of wondering which channels I'll lose next. The ones that go are usually good channels, not low watched channels like WE or Oxygen.)

I've had Time Warner Cable, then switched to Dish, and now am with AT&T UVerse. I wanted to add a few things to the above:

- We have three PCs that simultaneously game with absolutely no slowdown, while HD is running, on anything.

- we haven't seen any volume issue on the televisions at all. Not sure if its a set difference or a UVerse thing.

- Uverse digital phone has an amazing amount of features included, at a cheaper price.

We've had Uverse since January of 2008.
