The lovin’/not lovin’ list
A few things that are recently beloved, as well as things that I’m finding annoying (because “hate” is such a strong word).
Lovin’:
- “Super Stardust HD” for the PlayStation3 — I’ll be writing up a full review soon, but this might be the best game I’ve played for the PS3 so far. It’s like “Asteroids” meets “Geometry Wars Evolved.” It costs less than $10 as a download on the PlayStation Network and its quality in relation to $60 games you buy at the store is notable: are any games out for the PS3 six times better than this one? No. They are not.
- “Flight of the Conchords” — My work podmates and I are all loving it. Funny, clever, understated, great songs. I was skeptical, but Gemaine and Bret have completely won me over. If you don’t have HBO, don’t worry. Two episodes and lots of behind-the-scenes clips are available for free on iTunes.
- “Notes on a Scandal” — The only way Judi Dench could be any cooler is if she rode around on a motorcycle giving people the bird all the time.
- Pocketmod.com — Tiny, printable books that you can make out of a single sheet of paper. Origamiastic!
Not lovin’:
- “Cooking Mama Cookoff” for the Nintendo Wii — What sounds and looks like a lot of fun becomes tedious, annoying and frustrating. I wanted to like this game. Cooking plus videogames? What could have been better?
- “Harry Potter” spoilers — I’m on page 300. Shut it.
- The ascension of comic book/toy culture at the box office — Sure, I liked “Transformers,” but I fear the future greenlighting of movies based on the Bazooka Joe comics, Rainbow Brite and “American Dad.”
