The Austin Criminal Defense Lawyers Association has a new leader — 45-year-old Charlie Grant.

Grant, at right, took over last week as the association’s presiding director from lawyer Virginia Greenway. He is a 1990 graduate of St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio and has been practicing criminal law since joining the Travis County Attorney’s Office in 1994. From 1996 to 1997, Grant was a prosecutor in District Attorney Ronnie Earle’s office.

The Austin Criminal Defense Lawyers Association has about 200 members and is focused on providing legal education to its lawyers, Grant said. The group also provides the defense bar an organized voice in seeking to improve the Travis County justice system.

The quality of the local justice system relies heavily on competent criminal defense, and Grant said one of his goals is “continuing to improve our nice little quality of practice.”

The other members of the association’s board are: Greenway, Gus Garcia, Jr., Katie Salzer, Melissa Shearer, Wade Russell, Patricia Cummings, Wayne Meissner, Dan Dworin, Frank Bryan, Leigh Gonnet and Paul Walcutt.
