SXSW makes March one of the most jam packed months for drinking events out of the whole year in Austin. I’ll be putting together a round-up of great drinking events for SXSW separately from your normal drinking calendar this month, so keep your eyes peeled for that. Saturday, March 17 from 1 to 6 p.m. Danish Day Festival at Jester King Craft Brewery. The second annual installment of the festival will feature the release the second collaboration with Mikkeller, which is called “Weasel Rodeo,” a strong stout brewed with chipotle peppers, smoked malt and Vietnamese weasel coffee. Tickets are $20 and includes entrance to Ceres Park Ranch, home of Jester King, use of the brewery grounds, parking, a spot on any or all of the tours and souvenir stemware. The souvenir stemware can then be used for free samples of all the different beers.
Saturday, March 17 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Cooking with Beer class at Whole Foods Lamar. Learn to brew up a complete menu of delicious foods with beer as the main ingredient. $70.
Wednesday, March 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Extract/Mini Mash Beginner’s Brewing Class at Austin Homebrew. 1 1/2 hour class that covers the basics of making your own homemade beer. This course is intended for beginners who have never made beer. $15.

Monday, March 26 at 7 p.m. Cinema Cocktails at Alamo Slaughter: “From Russia with Love.” Drink Russian vodka martinis (shaken, not stirred) during this classic James Bond flick at the new Alamo theater.

January drinking calendar
Just because it’s January and everyone is working on their annual detox, doesn’t mean there aren’t at least a few drinking events happening this month. Here’s a handful, for those of you who don’t care about working off those extra holiday pounds.
Friday, January 6 and Saturday, January 7 at 10 p.m. Screening of “Cocktail” at Alamo Ritz. Bill Norris has mixed up some special cocktails for the screening of this 80’s classic. A little flair bartending might also happen before the movie.
Saturday, January 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. Jester King rally for Open the Taps. During their regular tour and tasting room hours, the brewery will also rally to raise awareness about the grassroots organization that is working towards bettering the craft beer scene in Texas. The brewery will also release Das Wunderkind Sour Saison.
Wednesday, January 11 at 6 p.m. Uncle Billy’s Brew Tour at Barton Springs location. Check out the brewing facilities, discuss and sample beers after with Brewer Amos.
Thursday, January 12 at 6 p.m. Twisted X pint night at Fion Steiner Ranch. Several kegs of Twisted X will be tapped, along with some tasty snacks. Free pint glasses to the first 50 or so guests who purchase the Twisted X Premium Lager or Senor Viejo Imperial Black Lager aged in Republic Tequila barrels.
Saturday, January 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Austin Brew Bus Tour. Visit a handful of Austin’s breweries by bus — without the worry of driving yourself. $55 per person.

Wednesday, January 18 at 7 p.m. Texas beer tasting at the Draft Pick. Select samples from Texas breweries including Southern Star Brewing, Independence Brewing, Circle Brewing, Thirsty Planet, (512) Brewing, and Rahr & Sons and a special food buffet menu will be available. $20 at the door. A drawing will take place for a tour of one of the breweries for the winner and 9 guests, including a 3 drink tix per person, souvenir glasses, and a reserved table after the tour.
Thursday, January 19 at 7 p.m. Homefield Grill Beer Dinner. A five course dinner paired with craft brews. $49.95 per person. Reservations required at 388-4663.
Friday, January 20 from 6 to 7 p.m. Wine and Cheese Pairing at Whole Foods Market. Taste handpicked wines and how they pair with handpicked cheeses. Led by Joan Mckern, Whole Foods Market Wine Team Member, and Tiffany Cunningham, Whole Foods Market Cheese Specialist.
Saturday, January 21 all day. Port and Pairings along the Frederisckburg Wine Road 290. 10 wineries featuring tastings of Port paired with snacks. Participating wineries: Becker Vineyards, Chisholm Trail Winery, Fredericksburg Winery, Grape Creek Vineyards, Pedernales Cellars, Rancho Ponte Vineyard, Texas Hills Vineyard, Torre di Pietra Vineyards, William Chris Vineyards, and Woodrose Winery. No extra cost for the event, but some of the wineries charge a tasting fee.
Saturday, January 21 at 4 p.m. Uncle Billy’s Brew Tour at Lake Travis location. Check out the brewing facilities, discuss and sample beers after with the brewers.
Tuesday, January 24 at 6 p.m. Lone Star Paralysis Tequila Bash at Jack Allen’s Kitchen. Five area chefs—Albert Benitez of Cover 3 and Cover 2, Bryce Gilmore of Barley Swine, chef and cookbook author Rebecca Rather and Chris TenEyck and Jack Gilmore of Jack Allen’s Kitchen—will be pairing food with tequila and tequila cocktails from Ambhar, Don Julio, Dulce Vida, Patron, Pepe Z and Republic Tequila. Tickets are $200, and 100% of the donation goes to the Lone Star Paralysis Foundation. Ticket price includes spirit pairings, in addition to tax and gratuity.

Wednesday, August 31. French 75 competition at Second Bar + Kitchen. Not your typical cocktail competition, this one is between some of the best cocktail bars across the state. Anvil (Houston), The Esquire (Houston) and Cedars Social (Dallas) will compete with Second Bar + Kitchen to see who can sell the most French 75 cocktails in their respective bars. Each bar will offer the classic cocktail (gin or cognac, champagne, lemon juice, simple syrup) for a special price of $7.50.

SXSW is over, the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival is upon us, and Austin Restaurant Week starts up on the 10th. It’s a great time for food and drink, Austinites. March roars with opportunities for indulging in adult beverages. Everyone has SXSW on the brain, and for festival-goers, attempting to plan your schedule can create a headache loud enough to warrant cracking open a cold one. If you opt to avoid the noise this year (or simply want to continue the party before or afterwards), below is the list of non-SXSW related events going on this month. Tuesday, March 1 at 7 p.m. GO TEXAN Texas Twitter Tuesday led by grape grower Cliff Bingham with Bingham Family Vineyards. Cliff will talk about promising varieties in the High Plains. The wine tasting events will occur only on the weekend of March 26-27, but the faire is open all weekends through April 3rd. $42.50 includes a plate of fruit, cheese, bread and dessert, and tastings of 8 wines. Tickets do not include admission to the faire, which is $15 for adults.
Thursday, March 31 from 7 to 10 p.m. Maker’s Mark Craft Cocktail Competition at the Stars Across Texas Classic at The Long Center for the Performing Arts.
