January drinking calendar

Just because it’s January and everyone is working on their annual detox, doesn’t mean there aren’t at least a few drinking events happening this month. Here’s a handful, for those of you who don’t care about working off those extra holiday pounds.

Friday, January 6 and Saturday, January 7 at 10 p.m. Screening of “Cocktail” at Alamo Ritz. Bill Norris has mixed up some special cocktails for the screening of this 80’s classic. A little flair bartending might also happen before the movie.

Saturday, January 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. Jester King rally for Open the Taps. During their regular tour and tasting room hours, the brewery will also rally to raise awareness about the grassroots organization that is working towards bettering the craft beer scene in Texas. The brewery will also release Das Wunderkind Sour Saison.

Wednesday, January 11 at 6 p.m. Uncle Billy’s Brew Tour at Barton Springs location. Check out the brewing facilities, discuss and sample beers after with Brewer Amos.

Thursday, January 12 at 6 p.m. Twisted X pint night at Fion Steiner Ranch. Several kegs of Twisted X will be tapped, along with some tasty snacks. Free pint glasses to the first 50 or so guests who purchase the Twisted X Premium Lager or Senor Viejo Imperial Black Lager aged in Republic Tequila barrels.

Saturday, January 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Austin Brew Bus Tour. Visit a handful of Austin’s breweries by bus — without the worry of driving yourself. $55 per person.

Sunday, January 15. Flying Saucer Austin 4th Anniversary. Special Tappings all day and $3 Texas Pints.

Sunday, January 15 at 6:30 p.m Winemaker Dinner at Cru in the Domain. A four course dinner paired with Krupp Brothers wines from Atlas Peak to Pritchard Hill. $75 per person. Special bottle discounts. Reservations required. 512-339-9463.

Monday, January 16 at 7 p.m. A Torrid Affair January Supper Club at Springdale Farm. Dwayne Clark of Peche and Bryce Gilmore of Barley Swine team up to create a six course plate and cocktail combination. Proceeds benefit the Dell Children’s Medical Center and Sustainable Food Center. $100.

Tuesday, January 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. Bourbon, Bites and Blues at the Four Seasons. $5 Angel’s Envy bourbon cocktails, bites from TRIO and live blues music.

Wednesday, January 18 at 7 p.m. Texas beer tasting at the Draft Pick. Select samples from Texas breweries including Southern Star Brewing, Independence Brewing, Circle Brewing, Thirsty Planet, (512) Brewing, and Rahr & Sons and a special food buffet menu will be available. $20 at the door. A drawing will take place for a tour of one of the breweries for the winner and 9 guests, including a 3 drink tix per person, souvenir glasses, and a reserved table after the tour.

Thursday, January 19 at 7 p.m. Homefield Grill Beer Dinner. A five course dinner paired with craft brews. $49.95 per person. Reservations required at 388-4663.

Friday, January 20 from 6 to 7 p.m. Wine and Cheese Pairing at Whole Foods Market. Taste handpicked wines and how they pair with handpicked cheeses. Led by Joan Mckern, Whole Foods Market Wine Team Member, and Tiffany Cunningham, Whole Foods Market Cheese Specialist.

Saturday, January 21 all day. Port and Pairings along the Frederisckburg Wine Road 290. 10 wineries featuring tastings of Port paired with snacks. Participating wineries: Becker Vineyards, Chisholm Trail Winery, Fredericksburg Winery, Grape Creek Vineyards, Pedernales Cellars, Rancho Ponte Vineyard, Texas Hills Vineyard, Torre di Pietra Vineyards, William Chris Vineyards, and Woodrose Winery. No extra cost for the event, but some of the wineries charge a tasting fee.

Saturday, January 21 at 4 p.m. Uncle Billy’s Brew Tour at Lake Travis location. Check out the brewing facilities, discuss and sample beers after with the brewers.

Tuesday, January 24 at 6 p.m. Lone Star Paralysis Tequila Bash at Jack Allen’s Kitchen. Five area chefs—Albert Benitez of Cover 3 and Cover 2, Bryce Gilmore of Barley Swine, chef and cookbook author Rebecca Rather and Chris TenEyck and Jack Gilmore of Jack Allen’s Kitchen—will be pairing food with tequila and tequila cocktails from Ambhar, Don Julio, Dulce Vida, Patron, Pepe Z and Republic Tequila. Tickets are $200, and 100% of the donation goes to the Lone Star Paralysis Foundation. Ticket price includes spirit pairings, in addition to tax and gratuity.

Wednesday, January 25 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Bobby Burns Day at Twin Liquors. Scotch sampling commemorating the birth anniversary of Poet Robert Burns. Light Bites and instruction included. At Twin Liquors Marketplaces-Hancock,Four Points, Waco, San Antonio and College Station.

Thursday, January 26 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Burgess Cellars Wine & Food Pairing at Cru on 2nd. Four pairings of Burgess wine and food from Cru for $35.

Thursday, January 26 at 7 p.m. Austin Beer Guide Winter Issue Release Party at Draught House Pub. Come grab a copy of the new issue. A keg of the Bourbon Barrel Night RYE-der will be tapped, as will a gravity keg of Jester King cask-hopped Thrash Metal Farmhouse Strong Ale.

Friday, January 27. Meet the Beermaker Dinner at Whole Foods: Austin Beerworks. Waitlist room only. Sign up for cancellations.

Friday, January 27 at 5 p.m. Prohibition Party at Sullivan’s Steakhouse. Costumes, Prohibition style cocktails, and door prizes are all part of the speakeasy fun. Live music, cocktail specials and a costume contest will all take place at the party.

Saturday, January 28th from 1 to 6 p.m. Jester King 1st Anniversary and Market. Jester King beers, rare guest draughts, casks and gravity kegs from De Proef, Mikkeller and Ridgeway as well as Bavarian gravity kegs will be available to drink. Food from local vendors, and music as well. $20. 500 people limit.

Saturday, January 28 at noon. First Anniversary party at The Barber Shop. Fish and Chips all day. No cover. Glass giveaways from Real Ale, Rahr, Circle, Sierra, Jester King, and Ommegang. More info on their Facebook page.
