Brewers for a day
So how was your week? Austin homebrewers Scott Wells and Mark Kizer had a really good day this week — they brewed their Belgian-style saison at Southern Star, the upstart brewery in Conroe the other day, the result of a competition that drew 42 other entries.
Both Wells and Kizer are members of the Austin Zealots homebrewers group and active competition brewers. The saison, in fact, already has been bestowed with a gold.
So how was it?
“It was pretty awesome,” Kizer said. “The guys there were fantastic. They let us run the show almost. Every homebrewer thinks of brewing commercially. And we got to do it. And Southern Star treated us so well.”
“We spent the whole day going, ‘Holy crap. Coolest day ever,’ ” said Wells. “It’s crazy. We are so elated.”
The beer should be making its way to the Draught House, Ginger Man, Flying Saucer and perhaps other Austin locations around mid-September.

Happy birthday, (512) Brewing
That’s right. Austin’s newest micro is turning one, they’re having a party from 2-5 p.m. Aug 1 — that’s a week from tomorrow — and you don’t even have to bring a present.
There will be music, hourly tours and, not to bury the lede, tastings of (512) One, their anniversary brew. It’s brewed in the style of a Belgian strong ale with Forbidden Fruit yeast and Good Flow wildflower honey. I was invited to stop by for a sample the other day and it’s really, really good — around 8 percent alcohol, with that yeasty Belgian aroma, not too heavy to drink in the dead of summer. Stop by and congratulate Kevin and Nate. The brewery is at 407 Radam Ln.

National Tequila Day is TODAY
At least that’s what the folks at Cabo Wabo, Sammy Hagar’s tequila company, say. And with Hagar’s quiet dignity and reserve comes a certain authority. So I believe them. Here’s some recipes they sent along:
CABO HABANERO 2 oz. Cabo Wabo Reposado tequila 1 oz. Cinzano dry vermouth 1 small whole Habanero Pepper for garnish
Add ingredients to an ice-filled rocks glass. Stir and spice it up with a red rocker habanero pepper.
VIVA TEQUILA 1 oz. Cabo Wabo Reposado Tequila 1 oz. Triple Sec 1 oz. Cointreau 1 oz. Southern Comfort 1 oz. pineapple juice Shake it up and serve over ice in a margarita glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.
SAMMY SLAMMER 1 oz. Cabo Reposado Tequila ½ oz. Almond Liqueur Splash 151-proof Rum
Layer Cabo Tequila and almond liqueur in a shot glass and float 151 proof rum. Light a flame on top and serve. Extinguish flame and shoot. (Blogger’s note: Don’t try this if you’ve already got a couple of drinks in you.)
