Police investigating suspicious death in Southeast Austin

Updated at 6 p.m.: Police said they are looking for black man in his 40s as the suspect in the murder of a man in his 60s in Southeast Austin.

The suspect is between 6-foot-4-inches and 6-foot-6-inches, thin to medium build, with short, black hair, police said. The man was unshaven with thick stubble, is possibly homeless and has recently been frequenting the area of East Riverside Drive and Tinnin Ford Road, near where the older man was found dead this morning, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 472-8477.

Earlier: Police found the body of a man in his 60s with trauma to his body inside a Southeast Austin apartment Sunday morning.

Homicide detectives are still investigating the “suspicious death” after police found the man’s body following a 911 call about 9 a.m., Austin Police spokesman Dennis Farris said.

“The man is believed to be the resident of the apartment,” Farris said.

After receiving the 911 call for check welfare and arriving at a second-floor unit in the Barcelona Apartments complex at 2101 Elmont Drive just off East Riverside Boulevard, Farris said, officers responded received no response from the unit and entered the unit.

Inside they found the man’s body, he said.

Farris declined to elaborate on who the man was, what the trauma was or if anyone else lived in the unit and said he did not know how long the body was in the unit before officers found it.

Austin police identify body found near Barton Springs pool

Updated Sunday, 2:25 p.m.

Police have identified the man whose body was found near Barton Springs pool as Robert Negrete. According to the Austin Police Department, an autopsy was performed this morning and Negrete’s death is no longer considered to be suspicious. A final ruling will be made pending toxicology results, according to police.

Updated 5:33 p.m.

The body of a white male believed to be in his thirties was found near the entrance of Barton Springs Pool today, police said.

A passer-by saw the body at about 1:47 p.m. today and notified police.

The body, which police did not identify, had experienced trauma, said Senior Police Officer Veneza Aguinaga.

The death is being treated as suspicious, Aguinaga said.

Anyone with information on the case can call the Austin Crime Stoppers at 472-8477.

Earlier: Austin police are responding to what officers are calling a “suspicious death” after finding a dead man today.

No further information is yet available.

Police investigating suspicious death near Austin High

Austin police are investigating a suspicious death after the body of a man was found in a sleeping bag near Austin High School, officials said.

Police said they received a call about the body about 1:15 p.m. today near Stephen F. Austin Drive and MoPac Boulevard; the man appears to have been in his 30s and is not believed to be a student, police said.

More information will come after a police news conference.

Police ID man found dead Monday morning on South Congress

Austin Police are still unsure why a man, whose body was found with obvious trauma Monday morning, died.

Police on Wednesday said David Guerrero, 54, was last seen early Sunday evening at a club on South Congress Avenue near Red Bird Lane. He was found about one block north in a creek at about 9:20 a.m. Monday.

Guerrero was last seen wearing a beige baseball cap, blue button down shirt and blue jeans, police said.

UPDATE: Victims identified in possible Travis County murder-suicide

UPDATE 2:30 P.M. Officials with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office have released the names of a man and woman who died in an apparent murder-suicide Friday morning.

Sheriff’s spokesman Roger Wade said investigators believe 35-year-old Jessica Arellano Salazar was killed by her husband, 35-year-old Efren Tapia Salazar.

Investigators arrived at the home in the 6700 block of Creedmoor Road around noon on Friday when Jessica Salazar was reported missing from work, Wade said. They found her dead inside the home. When investigators went to the 15200 block of Piedmont Trail to look for Efren Salazar, he was also found dead on the property.

Wade said deputies are still investigating how the couple died, but the case is still believed to be a murder-suicide.

Update, 6:00 p.m.: Authorities now believe the woman found dead in southeastern Travis County earlier today was likely part of a murder-suicide.

The husband of the victim was later found dead with a self-inflicted injury elsewhere in the county, Travis County Sheriff’s Capt. Wes Priddy said. Priddy could not say where the husband was found or the nature of his injury, but did say it appeared to be caused by the same means that killed his wife. Earlier: Authorities are investigating a suspicious death in southeastern Travis County near the airport.

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 12:08 p.m. that a woman was found dead in her home at in the 6700 block of Creedmore Road, Capt. Wes Priddy said.

“We do have a female who was found deceased in the home under suspicious circumstances,” Priddy said, but he could not give any more information.

Robert Boatman, a neighbor, said he was cooking at his home when he heard screaming outside and saw a woman running out of the house and several police cars arriving at the scene.

“Some lady was screaming, I came outside and there were like five cop cars outside,” Boatman said.

Boatman said he did not know the people that lived at the house, but from his encounters with them, they seemed like “all right people.”

Police investigating suspicious death

UPDATE:

A woman was found dead inside a South Austin home earlier today after police responded to a call about a domestic disturbance, Cpl. Chad Martinka said.

Officers came to a home in the 4800 block of Brighton Road near Stassney Lane and Manchaca Road about 4:30 p.m.

Police officials provided few details today. Martinka said a man found near the home was taken into police custody for questioning.

“We believe this to be an isolated incident. We don’t believe anyone else is in danger,” Martinka said.

A husband and wife live at the home, Martinka said. But he would not say whether the wife was the woman found dead or whether the husband is the man in police custody.

Martinka also would not say whether the woman found dead had been killed but said her death was suspicious.

Sheriff's office investigating suspicious death

The death of a person found dead in Lake Travis this morning is being investigated as suspicious, according to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office.

Roger Wade, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said the office received a call about 11:30 a.m. Several men working on a boat dock spotted the body floating in the water, he said.

“The body is in such a condition that detectives cannot determine what age or (gender) it is,” Wade said. “It will have to be sent to the medical examiner’s office.”

Man ID'd in weekend homicide

UPDATE FROM THE AUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT: On Saturday, June 11, 2011 Austin Police Officers responded to a deceased person call at 1332 Lamar Square. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered Tommie Jake Huerta deceased inside an apartment. Austin Police Homicide Detectives were called to the scene to conduct an investigation into the death of Mr. Huerta. Homicide detectives learned that Huerta was involved in a physical disturbance with other occupants in the apartment.

Mr. Huerta’s death has been ruled a homicide. Homicide Detectives are currently talking to persons of interest but no charges have been filed at this time.

The case remains under investigation by the Austin Police Department Homicide Unit. Anyone with information is asked to call the Homicide tip line at 512-477-3588, Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS or text “Tip 103” + your message to CRIMES. You may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000 if your tip leads to an arrest or charges being filed.

EARLIER: Police are investigating what they call a “suspicious death” that occurred shortly after 2 a.m. in the 1300 block of Lamar Square.

Police were dispatched to a south Austin apartment complex for a disturbance call at 2:19 a.m.

Upon arrival, they found a man’s body. Medical personnel tried to revive the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:32 p.m., according to police.

The cause of death is unknown.

The person who lives at the apartment and made the emergency call was cooperating with investigators, police said.

Police investigate suspicious death

Update 1:50 p.m.: A second body has been discovered at the home where police were earlier investigating a suspicious death, an Austin police official said Friday.

A press conference is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Earlier: Austin police officials are on the scene of a suspicious death in East Austin.

A body was discovered this morning at JJ Seabrook Drive near MLK and Airport boulevards, the Austin police official said.

The discovery was made after a search warrant was executed at the address, the official said.

Earlier, Travis County sheriff’s officials were investigating a concern there and then contacted Austin police for assistance, the official said.

Officers observed something suspicious at the scene and then obtained a search warrant, the official said.

Cedar Creek death investigated

The Bastrop County sheriff’s office is investigating the death of a man during a “home invasion” Friday night in Cedar Creek.

Officials said the incident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Lake View Drive. No information was available on the circumstances of the incident, the victim’s identity or the cause of death.

Police investigating suspicious death

A man’s body was discovered this afternoon in Northeast Austin, and homicide detectives are investigating the matter as a suspicious death.

Lt. Cedric Hudson of the Austin Police Department said a homeless man found the body shortly after 1 p.m. in the 7500 block of the westbound service road of U.S. 290 East. Hudson said police had no information on the cause of death.

Police investigating suspicious East Austin death

UPDATE: The deceased person has been identified as Lawrence Brown, 32.

Austin police are asking for the public’s help in investigating a suspicious death after an East Austin incident left one man dead this morning, a police official said Wednesday.

Police had limited details on what occurred, but said that at about 3 a.m. Wednesday an incident involving 20 to 30 people left one male injured with “non life-threatening injuries,” said Austin Senior Police Officer Dennis Farris.

He was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge, where he later died, Farris said.

Austin homicide detectives are now investigating the death, Farris said.

The incident occurred close to the intersection of 13th and Chicon streets, Farris said. Police investigators were seen collecting evidence early Wednesday as police talked to nearby residents. A nearby block of 13th Street was closed temporarily as investigators worked on the scene but reopened shortly before 7 a.m.

Police could not immediately say what triggered the gathering or release further information about the person who died, such as his age. They are asking for the public’s help and for any witnesses to call 477-3588.
