18-year-old woman charged in North Austin bank robbery

Update: An 18-year-old Connally High School student has been charged in the robbery of a Chase Bank in North Austin on Monday, according to an arrest affidavit.

Leticia Denova, 18, of Austin, is facing a charge of robbery by threat, a second-degree felony and bail of $25,000, the affidavit said. Investigators found evidence that someone matching the description of the suspect had been staying at an upscale North Austin hotel, the affidavit said.

Denova went to the Chase Bank at 1700 West Parmer Lane Monday around 9:20 a.m. and handed a teller a note saying “she had a bomb and a gun and demanded money,” the affidavit said.

An agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation received information that the suspect in the robbery looked like an employee who worked at a dry cleaning business across the street from the bank, the affidavit said. Employees at the business confirmed Denova was a former employee there, the affidavit said.

Shortly before noon, a witness saw a woman hastily entering and exiting a room at the Westin Austin Hotel at the Domain, the affidavit said. That woman was seen disposing items in a nearby garbage receptacle, which was later found to contain money and a ski mask, the affidavit said.

The hotel later verified that a woman matching the identity of the suspect was staying at the hotel under an alias, the affidavit said.

Denova was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after she contacted police, officials said.

Earlier: Austin police are investigating a robbery this morning at the Chase Bank branch on Parmer Lane and Metric Boulevard in North Austin, an official said.

Police say a woman walked into the bank wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a black beanie cap about 9:20 a.m. and passed a note to a teller demanding cash, Cpl. Chad Martinka said.

She left in an unknown direction with an undisclosed amount of cash Martinka said. It was unclear whether she left on foot or in a vehicle, he said.

Austin police officers arrested Frisinger without a struggle Monday night at a halfway house where he lived at 2501 E. Ben White Blvd. Arresting officers found an orange and white bag and a long sleeved tee shirt with a logo for St. Stephens Tennis Academy — two items witnesses said were worn by the man who fled on foot with money shortly before noon from the bank, the affidavit said.

Bank tellers told police that a man walked into the bank, presented a note threatening that he was armed with a handgun and demanded money. The robber was captured on video camera in the bank, the affidavit said.

A caller to Crime Stoppers, having seen reports of the robbery, provided Frisinger’s name to police.

According to a computer checks of his criminal record, Frisinger has at least two convictions for burglary and two for theft dating back to 1994 in Travis and Denton counties.
