Leander boy attacked by mountain lion hospitalized again

A Leander boy is back in the hospital after his doctor suspected the wounds from a mountain lion attack had become infected.

Six-year-old Rivers Hobbs was snatched from his mother’s hand by a mountain lion that clamped its jaws on his face at Big Bend National Park last Sunday night.

Hobbs was walking back to his family’s hotel room from the restaurant at Chisos Mountains Lodge with his parents and brother at about 8 p.m. when the mountain lion attacked. It dragged Rivers into a bush next to the walkway, releasing him after the boy’s father stabbed the lion’s chest with a pocketknife.

Kristi Harris, the boy’s mother, said Rivers was admitted to Scott & White Healthcare in Temple on Thursday. Doctors there are running tests to determine what bacteria has infected Rivers and whether his salivary gland is damaged, she said.

Harris said he may need surgery, his third operation since the attack. She said the experience has been hard on her and her husband, Jason Hobbs, but that Rivers is in good spirits.

“I don’t think the kids really fully understand what happened,” she said. “Of course we do, so that makes it very difficult as a parent.”
