Random recollections at the halfway point …
A guy in Wichita not only handed me a $100 bill at Kirbys Beer Store (“I know it’s rough on the road,” he said) but the same guy also got us a room at a Holiday Inn in Lawrence the next night. He didn’t know my last name, so he put it in the name of “Erin Smith” and sure enough, there was a key taped to the counter when we rolled up at the hotel at 2 a.m. Awesome! … We played with Dixie Witch last night and the whole thing totally blew my mind. Toby learns the songs more and more every day and is just a total champ. We sold a ton of merch and people were so nice, especially the Madison roller derby girls… . Two days ago, between Wichita and Lawrence, we spent the whole afternoon lying around on plastic floats at a lake in Kansas called El Dorado. As Adam says, “it was the right thing to do.” We were all just floating on the water, staring up at the big sky country, and basking. We agreed that we couldn’t conceive of a better hangover cure. Of course, now we need a sunburn cure because The Personals are a bit more “Rock Lobster” than we were when we left home… . Right now we’re at Adam’s brother’s place in Madison, where 4-year-old Ben is eating something called Cheddar Bunnies, trying to figure out if he can fit his whole hand in his mouth (answer: not quite), and building things with blocks, only to knock them down. We will not be spending a dime on lodging on this trip, thanks to family, friends, awesome Midwestern folks who let bands crash on their couches (more on Brody, Wichita’s own sound man/band host/giver of charcoal, when I’ve got time), and of course, one amazing guy who decided to set us up in Lawrence… . Milwaukee, here we come!
