Richard Linklater tapes 'Overheard' next week
Evan Smith sits down with director Richard Linklater for a taping of ‘Overheard’ next week at Studio 6A on the University of Texas campus. The director will likely share some stories about the making of his latest, “Bernie,” a comedy about a mean and eccentric East Texas widow (Shairley MacLaine) and the lovable mortician (Jack Black) who killed her. The hilarious and mildly disturbing true tale based on a Skip Hollandsworth story in Texas Monthly made its regional premiere at SXSW earlier this month.
Tuesday’s noon taping is free and open to the public, but you must RSVP here.

'For the Record: Tarantino in Concert' combines film, music, theater
Film? Music? Theater?

Ginifer King
Yes, yes and yes.
“For the Record: Tarantino in Concert” combines all three, bringing some of the well-known filmmaker’s works to life on stage using the soundtracks from “Inglourious Basterds,” “Jackie Brown,” “Kill Bill,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Reservoir Dogs” and more.
“To watch this idea and show grow over the past year and a half from an intimate concert in front of about 40 friends to now performing at the Long Center for the Performing Arts for over 2,000 people has been an incredible journey,” said Shane Scheel , who conceived and directed the show with Christopher Lloyd Bratten. “Having Quentin Tarantino come to see ‘For the Record: Tarantino in Concert’ and absolutely love it reaffirmed that what we are presenting is truly something special and unique.”
The cast includes Ginifer King from Broadway’s “Gypsy,” “American Idol” alum Von Smith and recording artist Audra Mae.
Catch “For the Record” Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Long Center, 701 W. Riverside Drive. Tickets are $24 to $49. More details at LongCenter.org.
In advance of the show, the American-Statesman did a quick question-and-answer with King, Smith and Mae.

Filmmaker Ric Roman Waugh discusses 'Writing for Action' at Harry Ransom Center Tuesday night

Ric Roman Waugh knows his way around the action genre. The writer-director of “Felon” spent years as a stuntman and coordinator before beginning a successful career as a filmmaker.
The Los Angeles transplant recently finished shooting actioner “Snitch,” starring Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson and Susan Sarandon and is prepping a script for a biopic about legendary daredevil Evel Knievel. A new member of the Austin film family, Waugh will participate in an Austin Film Festival-sponsored discussion, “Conversations in Film: Writing for Action,” Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Harry Ransom Center Theater (300 W. 21st St.).
Waugh will use film clips and his own scripts to explain how to craft action scenes. Tickets for the event are $10 for the general public and $8 for AFF members. A reception prior to the event will feature a special exhibit curated specifically for the Waugh conversation. Ransom Center curator of film Steve Wilson will be on hand to discuss a collection of storyboards, including the dogfight scene from “Top Gun” (Warren Skaaren Collection), the climax of “Cape Fear” and a fight scene from “Raging Bull” (both from the Robert DeNiro Collection).
At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, AFF screens “Felon” followed by a conversation with Waugh at the Texas Spirit Theater at Bullock Texas State History Museum ($5).
