Kwanten in Austin
Ryan Kwanten, best known as the hunky but rather dim brother of Sookie Stackhouse in HBO’s “True Blood,” has been hanging out in Austin this weekend to promote his new movie, “Red Hill,” which screened at Fantastic Fest on Saturday.
He arrived Friday night and went to the Highball to “sample your local ales,” he said early Saturday afternoon. And what was his favorite? “Fireman’s 4, which was quite good,” he said.
Before starting media interviews at 12:30 p.m., Kwanten chatted with people outside the Alamo South, most notably striking up a conversation with actor Elijah Wood, who was almost unrecognizable while wearing sunglasses.
Kwanten plays Shane Cooper, a city policeman who moves to a rural area in Australia for peace and quiet, only to face a convict who has escaped prison and is intent on killing every man in town.
“Red Hill” is scheduled to open in Austin Nov. 5.
It’s a classic western, shot in the high country of Australia. Kwanten said he’s heading back to L.A. for a brief stay before taking off to London to do interviews for “Legend of the Guardians,” in which he voices one of the new animated feature’s characters.
