UT alumnus wins Student Academy Award
Ruth Fertig and her documentary “Yizkor” have won a Student Academy Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Last year Fertig earned her Masters of Fine Arts in Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas.
“‘Yizkor,’ which means “Remembrance” in Hebrew, is the story of a woman’s struggle to keep herself and her children alive in a concentration camp during the Holocaust. The story, based on Fertig’s grandmother’s experience during the Holocaust, was her MFA thesis film at UT,’ a UT release says.
Fertig’s previous film, “Two Spirits,” aired on PBS and Free Speech TV. Her first film, “The Cockroach Project,” premiered on the Documentary Channel this year. She will receive her award June 12 at the 37th Annual Student Academy Awards competition in Los Angeles.
Fertig is the third RTF alumnus to win a Student Academy Award since 2002.

Update: Fertig learned over the weekend (June 12) that “Yizkor” won the Gold Academy Award out of Gold, Silver and Bronze. That’s a first place!
