Best picture nominees

Well, the 10 best picture Oscar nominees have been announced. And there was a big surprise.

“The Blind Side,” the Sandra Bullock star vehicle, got a best picture nomination.

Most critics didn’t expect the movie to get a best picture nomination, although Bullock was considered a shoo-in for a best actress nod. And she indeed got the nomination.

Clint Eastwood’s “Invictus” was shut out. And while that’s justifiable, it’s unusual for the academy to overlook anything Eastwood does. Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman got supporting actor and best actor noms for the movie, however.

The 10 nominees were “Avatar,” “The Blind Side,” “District 9”, “An Education,” “The Hurt Locker,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “Precious,” “A Serious Man,” “Up,” and “Up in the Air.”

This was only the second time in history that an animated feature, “Up,” has been nominated for best picture.
