Another hot filmmaker moves to Austin
We ran into filmmaker Andrew Bujalski tonight at a screening of the (insufferably creepy, and good) “Funny Games” at the Alamo South. He was with his girlfriend, novelist and Texas Monthly scribe Karen Olsson, and they confirmed that he moved to Austin from his hometown of Boston right as SXSW was kicking off a couple weeks ago.
Bujalski shot his last (still untitled, we think) film last summer in Austin and wrote his first excellent feature, “Funny Ha Ha,” in town, too.
With his muttery, sputtery, stuttery romantic-comedies — all extremely lo-fi and DIY and independent and shaky-cam and all that — Bujalski unwittingly spearheaded the so-called mumblecore movement. He also frequently co-stars in his movies (the other is the fine “Mutual Appreciation”), as well as the films of fellow mumblecorps members Joe Swanberg (“Hannah Takes the Stairs”) and the Zellner Brothers (“Goliath”).
He’s busy-busy, but he told me his Austin picture still has a ways to go, a ready date far off and “indeterminate.”
