Lauren Kelleher, marketing manager for Dripping Springs Vodka.

360a.jpg
Although originally from the U.S., Lauren Kelleher moved to Austin from London two years ago and has since been confusing people with her lack of a British accent and unfamiliarity with American slang. She worked in England as an interior designer and is now marketing manager for Dripping Springs Vodka, a family-run craft vodka company. She lives in a 1920s lavender house in SoCo with her dog Opal.

How will you start your Friday night?
This Friday I’m checking out Easy Tiger early for some beers and a little snack.

What band will you see this weekend?
I’m seeing my favorite dark country singer/song writer Robert Ellis at the Paramount. He now lives in Wimberley, and his album “Photographs” was named a top 20 Country Album for 2011.

What’s your favorite Austin band aside from who you will see this weekend?
I’m a fan of the Gourds and recently got introduced to Whiskey Shivers (one of the most fun shows I’ve ever seen).

What is your favorite venue to watch a show?
I love La Zona Rosa because of the outside courtyard and because although they have big names, it still feels kinda intimate.

Where will you go for late night eats after your night out?
I have a very indulgent late night Home Slice habit, which I just can’t seem to control.

Where can we find you when you are craving barbecue?
No matter where else I try, I always seem to come back to Rudy’s for their brisket. Those guys are pros.

Where can we find you when you are craving Tex-Mex?
It’s not Tex-Mex per se, but Torchy’s is my very favorite. My birthday present to myself last year was eating an entire serving of queso — alone.

Where can we find you grabbing a margarita?

La Condesa for all their tequila based cocktails and Docs for the insane pleasure of a Sundown (beer and frozen margarita) on a super hot day.

If you go to the lake, what will you do and which lake will you go to?
My rescue dog Opal is hyperactive enough to need the 5 mile loop on Town Lake everyday she’s not in daycare.

What is your favorite place to get brunch?
A croissant and coffee from La Boite Cafe on South Lamar. Their croissants are a work of art.

What’s your one “must-do” for visitors to Austin (this weekend or in general)?
The Continental Club never seems to disappoint, no matter what city visitors are from.

If you’re in need of a little pampering, where will you go? What do you recommend having done?
I love the pedicures at Embellish Spa. It’s just about the most girlie thing you can do
.

If you’re having a date night, what romantic spot will you go to and what will you order?
I think the most romantic things are the simplest, like a charcuterie board at Vino Vino or eating fried chicken from Mrs P’s in bed.

What’s Austin’s best-kept secret?
The Horseshoe Lounge — the best dive bar of all.

How will you end your Austin weekend? Where will you go and what will you do?
A good friend of mine treated me to a massage at Milk and Honey, which I’m doing Sunday evening. After that I think I’m going to buy some nice ingredients from Central Market and cook a classic French fish stew …

Ashley Beall was born and raised here and is proud to be an Austinite and Texan. She ventured out in 2003 to California for college and then work, but returned to her hometown in 2010, so her favorites below are a mix of old and new. She currently works in advertising sales at Tribeza, an Austin lifestyle magazine, and she volunteers with local organizations such as the Austin Ad Federation and Students of the World. Ashley loves to travel internationally and always has a camera in hand.

How will you start your Friday night?
Fridays tend to be low-key in my world so I’d head over to the Violet Crown Cinema, my new favorite movie theater. They have a bar and restaurant where I’d order one of their gourmet hot dogs with a side of queso. I try to arrive early so we can lounge and enjoy our meal before heading in to watch the latest indie film release.

If you go to a happy hour, which bar will you go to? What will you order?
My favorite happy hours bites would be Eddie V’s Broiled Oysters with Spinach and Artichoke Fondue, paired with some wine, or the Shrimp & Guacamole Tostada Bites at Z Tejas. As for a bar, I’d likely be found grabbing a beer at Kung Fu Saloon.

What is your favorite venue to watch a show?
ACL Live at The Moody Theatre is definitely my favorite venue, especially if you can get into a taping for “Austin City Limits.” The best concert of my life was being front row for Miranda Lambert’s taping last fall.

Where can we find you when you are craving barbecue?
Growing up, my dad used to take me to Green Mesquite BBQ on Barton Springs to get sausage wraps and a “pot chop” (not listed on the menu, but it’s the cook’s name for their baked potato covered with brisket). And, if you’ve never been, make sure you head out to the back patio for some live music at night.

Where can we find you when you are craving Tex-Mex?
Technically they call it “Mexican with a surfer twist,” but in my eyes it’s Tex-Mex. Hula Hut is by far my favorite restaurant in Austin, and it’s a “must do” for this city. It’s comfort food so I can’t go too often, but the outdoor patio on Lake Austin is perfect for a sunset dinner, and the Queso Compuesto (includes fajita beef, guacamole, pico, etc) is the best queso I’ve ever had! It’s the perfect place to take a visitor who wants to eat outdoors while enjoying a lake view. Plus, its close to downtown and you can arrive by car or boat!

If you go to the lake, what will you do and which lake will you go to?
Each lake has so much to offer! Sailing on Lake Travis is incredible, if it only had water (hopefully this drought will end soon and the lake will fill up)! For a quick mid-week boat ride, Lake Austin is the closest, easiest option. For a fun weekend activity, I’ll go canoeing or paddle boarding on Town Lake.

What is your favorite place to get brunch?
Since there wasn’t a question about breakfast tacos, I’ll have to put that here. Rosie’s Tamale House out by Hwy 71 and 620 has the best breakfast tacos in town. It’s a bit of a trek, but it’s worth it! An old favorite of my family’s was Cisco’s on East Sixth for Huevos Rancheros. It might look like a whole in the wall, but it’s a classic! If you’re downtown, South Congress Cafe’s migas are delicious and it’s a great spot for a Sunday morning stroll. You just have to find a parking spot…..

What is your favorite outdoor spot to enjoy a sunny Saturday?
It’s cliche, but I’d have to pick Barton Springs in the spring or fall. It just gets too crowded in the summer.

What’s your one “must-do” for visitors to Austin (this weekend or in general)?
The month of March is typically overshadowed by South by Southwest, but a “must-do” for anyone visiting next month is the Austin Rodeo (March 12- March 24). More than just bull riding, you can play fair games, ride a ferris wheel and other rides, dance, shop, and then enjoy a concert at the end of every night. I’ll be at opening night to see the Eli Young Band! Also in March is the Zilker Kite Festival! Other must-do’s are the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum, the Broken Spoke for dancing, the Oasis, and my pick for best local hotel is Hotel St Cecilia.

If you’re in need of a little pampering, where will you go? What do you recommend having done?
I have so many favorite spas/salons in Austin! For hair cut/color, I love Propaganda Hair Group on Fifth Street. For a quick blow out, I love Blo Blow Dry Salon before a night out or a big event. Milk + Honey has the best massages, and for an overnight total spa experience, I love going to Travaasa out in the Hill Country.

Where will you be seen shopping?
I like to mix it up all the time. You could find me anywhere from the Hill Country Galleria to the 2ND Street District to the Domain or even Barton Creek Mall. South Congress is also fun, and you can’t go there without stopping in Allen’s Boots!

If you’re having a date night, what romantic spot will you go to and what will you order?
Soleil, out near the Oasis, is great for a sunset dinner overlooking Lake Travis. I also think the city of Gruene, just south of Austin, is a romantic mini-getaway for shopping, dinner, live music, and dancing. Jeffrey’s in Clarksville and Piranha Killer Sushi are also great date spots.

Best Kept secret in Austin?
La Condesa on Second Street is a very well known place, but I’m not sure how many people know that downstairs is a private dining room. It’s not your typical private area though. Apparently the underground room was used as secret liquor/beer storage during prohibition, when supposedly the building was a grocery store. The small room still has the original walls and brick ceiling. It’s tough to explain, but it’s intimate, authentic, and rustic. And it only fits about 15 people total. In all the time I’ve lived in Austin (20 years), this seems to be my most favorite “secret” location.

How will you end your Austin weekend?
If you couldn’t tell already, I’m a sucker for a good view and great food. I’d end my weekend either with a quick climb of Mount Bonnell or at the County Line on the Hill for barbecue and view.

Clay Crepps

clay.jpg
Clay Crepps is originally from the Dallas area but is an Austinite at heart. As a jalapeño connoisseur, Crepps is always on the hunt for the most creative jalapeño dish or spicy cocktail. Crepps resides in the Barton Springs neighborhood with his boyfriend, Matt, and their adorable rescue dog, Zoe. Crepps attended the University of Texas and Austin and works in technology.

How will you start your Friday night?
After a crazy week at work, I’ll be unwinding with a few friends at House Wine. The Educated Guess Cabernet and Llama Malbec are consistently delicious, but their homemade Sangria is super refreshing on a warm February evening.

If you go to a happy hour, which bar will you go to? What will you order?
I love Gibson Bar on S. Lamar for happy hour. Their bottle of Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs sparkling is super reasonable (even after happy hour) considering the quality.

What band will you see this weekend?
On Saturday night, we’re headed to the Paramount Theater to see Demetri Martin’s comedy show. Afterward, we’ll grab a couple of drinks at Peche on 2nd and see where the night takes us. I’m a sucker for a jalapeño cocktail, and the Spicy Bee’s Knees and Texas Mule at Peche don’t disappoint.

What’s your favorite Austin band aside from who you will see this weekend?
I’ve been really enjoying Suite 709. Their first EP “Keys” is in heavy rotation on my iPod, and I’m excited about their new album coming out soon.

Where will you go for late night eats after your night out?
I’ve been known to hit up P.Terry’s for late night cravings. Their burgers and fries are twice as delicious after 2AM, and there’s never a lack of entertainment after the bars close. The Barton Springs location is open until 3AM on the weekends.

Where can we find you when you are craving barbecue?
If you have an afternoon to spare, a road trip to Luling is worth the 45 minute drive. Luling City Market doesn’t have much atmosphere, but the barbecue is the best around. For an option closer to home, I always choose Rudy’s. Nothing too fancy, but always tasty.

Where can we find you when you are craving Tex-Mex?
While it’s not very original, I love Chuy’s for Tex-Mex. Their salsa and margaritas are addictive. For something a little different, I love Polvo’s on S. First. The jalapeño and salsa bar are my dream come true.

Where can we find you grabbing a margarita?
Takoba on the east side has a great Mango Habanero Margarita. Their Michelada is also really delicious if you’re in the mood for something a little different.

What is your favorite place to get brunch?
My favorite Austin brunch is at Oliva on S. Lamar. The “Dandy Don Meredith” chili frite pie is the perfect hangover cure if you’re not counting calories. Plus the Mimosa trio with blood orange juice is a fun twist on the original.

Where is your favorite place to take your dog?
Our dog Zoe loves a long walk around Lady Bird Lake with a quick coffee stop at Jo’s downtown. We’ll also spend some time socializing with her doggie friends at Auditorium Shores.

What’s your one “must-do” for visitors to Austin?
One “must-do”? Impossible. Any trip to Austin should include a little barbecue, a little Tex-Mex, some time around the Lake and a stroll down South Congress.

How will you end your Austin weekend? Where will you go and what will you do?
I love to wrap up the weekend with a cup of coffee at Flipnotics. The huge outdoor patio is a great place to hang out, bring the dog and mentally prepare for the week ahead.

How will you start your Friday night?
Definitely plan to grab some Shiners over to the HEB and preparty at home before I head to the Northdoor for my favorite drink, the Son of a Gun. I highly recommend it!

If you go to a happy hour, which bar will you go to? What will you order?
Like I said I definitely love the Son of a Gun at the Northdoor. Other than that it’s possible that you could see me at any bar at any time. Generally drinking local beers like Live Oak and that one that has the lil A on it and comes in a can and also some Real Ales and some of them Independence’s. Beers and Fried Pickles at the Pour House sometimes go down as well. Also, some chicken wings.

What band will you see this weekend?
Friday I am hitting the Beauty Bar Ballroom to see 10YR and Kendrick Lamar. Hoping to get out of there in time to hit up some of Peligrosa at Scoot Inn as that’s one of the dopest parties every month, hands down. On Saturday, I’m gonna hit Gypsy Lounge to see DJ Burnone, Jackie Chain, Scotty, P-Watts, Indeed, KD, Lil-J of LOEGZ & Sertified. Might walk down to see DJ Orion at the Volstead for a few drinks. And Subkulture Patriots, Notion and the LNS Crew are at Frontier so that could be on the agenda as well. I’m a big fan of Bird Peterson so might have to hit Beauty Bar, and honestly would not mind seeing Ladysmith Black Mambazo at ACL Live, but alas and alak, I can only see so much and gotta see the homeys from ATL at Gypsy for sure.

What’s your favorite Austin band aside from who you will see this weekend?
There are a lot that I love! I love Kydd, League of Extraordinary Gz, Zorch, Butcher Bear and Charlie, Sorne, Equals, Die Slo, VIP, Gerald G, 10YR … man, you said band, that’s impossible for me to say, just one, no way I could do that. Christeene, Echocentrics, Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, Ocote Soul Sounds, Gary Clark Jr., Multitracker, Rubble, NickNack, Reaganometry, Soundfounder, Bali Yaaah, The Creamers, Atari Matt. There really are too many to name!

What is your favorite venue to watch a show?
Another hard question. I can’t pick just one. I guess the Scoot Inn gets the number one slot if it has to be one. But I love the ND, Mohawk, Flamingo Cantina, Red 7, Chilantro and Hotel Vegas are the bomb.

Where can we find you when you are craving barbecue?
If I have someone in town nine times out of 10 I will be bbqing for them myself. As for restaurants, I love Ruby’s, Rudy’s, Lamberts, some of the Food Trailers…

Where can we find you when you are craving Tex-Mex?
I love El Caribe on Lamar just south of 2222. That’s my spot for sure. And for more interior Mexican, I’ll take any excuse I can to go to Polvos. That’s one of my favorite restaurants hands down. The salsa bar is amazing.

If you go to the lake, what will you do and which lake will you go to?
I swim as much as possible when the water is up and the weather is right. I love to go to Lake Travis and jump off rocks and cliffs and such. Marshall Ford and Paleface are good for that.

What is your favorite place to get brunch?
The Nutty Brown Cafe on a Sunday is out of this world. Selection is insane and they have music and crazy birds all around. It’s really kid friendly and when the weather is right that’s a great place to start your Sunday.

What is your favorite outdoor spot to enjoy a sunny Saturday?
I love Barton Springs and Krause Springs.

Where is your favorite place to take your dog?
We have a cool little dog park up off of Great Northern and there’s generally some like-minded people and dogs there so it’s good for a hang.

What trails will you hit this weekend?
Well, we hiked at Enchanted Rock last weekend. This weekend we will probably head down to the greenbelt. Which greenbelt? I have no idea what any of the proper names are. The place where the hippies go.

What’s your one “must-do” for visitors to Austin?
For most of my friends that would be Waterloo Records. I really do not mind taking out-of-towners down there to get lost for a couple of hours.

Where will you be seen shopping?
Waterloo Records, End of an Ear, MusicMania, Book People, Half Price Books, Encore Music for now. I pretty much only ever buy books, records and beer. And gas. You might see me at the Chevron.

If you’re having a date night, what romantic spot will you go to and what will you order?
Uchi! That’s the spot for real. What will I order? Fish. I know nothing about sushi except that I like it and I like Asahi and Sake a lot!

What’s Austin’s best-kept secret?
There are no secrets in Austin, but if I had to say one, maybe I’d have to say Top Notch Fried Chicken.

Gabe Hernandez

likealocal.jpg

Gabe Hernandez is an El Paso refugee, naturalized Austinite, Radio-TV-Film graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and currently works in the technology industry.

How will you start your Friday night?
Friday night begins with a few drinks and skeeball games at Kung Fu Saloon. Then off to the East Side.

If you go to a happy hour, which bar will you go to? What will you order?
The Side Bar. Probably the strongest drinks I’ve had in town and bottles are dirt cheap at happy hour.

What band will you see this weekend?
Tonight was a rough night to choose: White Denim at Hotel Vegas or Neil Hamburger at ND or Balmorhea at The Parish? Ultimately, my decision was easy to buy tickets for Neil Hamburger because my favorite local band, T-Bird and the Breaks, is opening. Mind you, I had a friend that used to be in Balmorhea and White Denim rocked my New Year’s Eve.

What’s your favorite Austin band aside from who you will see this weekend?
Wild Child. I can’t help but wish they were huge already.

What is your favorite venue to watch a show?
Studio 6A, the original “Austin City Limits” Studio. But since that isn’t in use anymore, La Zona Rosa is definitely the best place for an intimate show with national acts.

Where will you go for late night eats after your night out?
Whataburger. If you haven’t tried the new spicy ketchup, then you’re missing out. Otherwise, 24 Diner has a sweet Chicken and Waffles that will put you in a food coma.

Where can we find you when you are craving barbecue?
A short hop over in Lockhart, Texas. Can’t go wrong with Smitty’s or Black’s.

Where can we find you when you are craving Tex-Mex?
Serrano’s at Symphony Square. It’s food mi abuela would be proud of.

Where can we find you grabbing a margarita?
Z Tejas. I don’t know anywhere else where you can get a margarita flight.

If you go to the lake, what will you do and which lake will you go to?
Lady Bird Lake. Hydrobiking is fun and isn’t as much of a core workout as stand up paddle boarding.

What is your favorite place to get brunch?
Moonshine.

What is your favorite outdoor spot to enjoy a sunny Saturday?
Gillis park. Get a pickup kickball game going and enjoy the weather. Looks like this weekend will involve Ultimate Frisbee at Zilker, though.

What trails will you hit this weekend?
If my allergies allow for it, the trail around Lady Bird Lake is accessible for whatever activity is your speed. You’ll find walkers, speed walkers, dog walkers, dog runners, runners, joggers, bikers and each one just as welcome.

What’s your one “must-do” for visitors to Austin?
Get outdoors. It is a bit cool out now but come summer time, you’re going to forget how great this weather is how nice it is not to sweat.

Where will you be seen shopping?
HOPE Farmer’s Market.

What’s Austin’s best-kept secret?
Poodie’s Hilltop Roadhouse

How will you end your Austin weekend? Where will you go and what will you do?
On this three day weekend, I’ll end it by catching the Hitchcock classic, “Vertigo,” at the South Lamar Alamo Drafthouse.

The Armadillo Christmas Bazaar! It is the 36th Season and it is better than ever! Shopping, music, art, drinks. Yay!

Where will you be seen shopping?
I love thrift shopping: Room Service, Goodwill Blue Hanger, Half Price Books…

Hyde Park Bar and Grill. Order a plate of their fries to share.

What’s Austin’s best-kept secret?
Green House, an art house and handmade boutique on the expanding North Loop shopping district. They have parties and fun art, music and film celebrations every week, plus neighborhood potlucks, swap meets and art and craft nights.

How will you end your Austin weekend? Where will you go and what will you do?
I absolutely love taking classes at Stitch Lab. That would be my ideal way to end the weekend, then spend the evening practicing my new mad skills!

Megan Bristol

Megan Profile.jpg
Megan Bristol hails from California, but Austin has her heart. As a true foodie, Megan has been conquering Austin one restaurant at a time and is loving every minute of it! Megan lives in the SoCo area of Austin and loves the walkability of her neighborhood.

How will you start your Friday night?
After a long week at work, Friday night is always date night with my boyfriend. We’re going to start things off with picking out our Christmas tree this week and then heading to our current quest with food trailers! We recently tasked ourselves with trying every food truck in Austin because we can get amazing, chef prepared meals at ridiculously low prices in a beautiful location: outdoors! Every trailer has a BYOB policy so I always stop at Austin Wine Merchant on my way home from work to pick up a new bottle. They have an amazing staff that always helps me find a delicious bottle. Our favorite trailers so far have been G’raj Mahal & Odd duck.

If you go to a happy hour, which bar will you go to?
I love going to Haddington’s on West Sixth because they serve my favorite Austin cocktail: The Corpse Revivor (order it with a cherry in it and you won’t be disappointed). Only a limited number of bars even know what this drink is, but Haddington’s version is my favorite!

What band will you see this weekend?
There is never a shortage of live music here. Sunday night we are seeing the National at Austin City Music Hall.

What is your favorite venue to watch a show?
I love Stubb’s. You get to watch great music under the stars, it doesn’t get much better.

Where will you go for late night eats after your night out?
P.Terry’s, yum!

Where can we find you when you are craving barbecue?
Rudy’s is my go-to barbecue spot because I like a sweeter sauce and their cream corn tastes better than most chocolate.

Where can we find you grabbing a margarita? Freddie’s on South First. If it is over 100 degrees outside, they are only $1.99! Their back porch is dog friendly and shaded by a beautiful oak tree. It’s very picturesque.

If you go to the lake, what will you do and which lake will you go to?
I love running on Town Lake, but if you have boat access I definitely recommend Lake Austin for a great real estate tour.

What is your favorite place to get brunch?
Takoba on the East side. I can’t get enough of their homemade chips!

What is your favorite outdoor spot to enjoy a sunny Saturday?
If the weather will allow it, we’re heading to the flagship Whole Foods store on Lamar for a little roof top ice skating and Christmas spirit! When it’s a little warmer out, Hamilton Pool is an Austin gem. It’s 15 minutes outside the city, but feels a world away.

What’s your one “must-do” for visitors to Austin (this weekend or in general)?
Go dancing at the Broken Spoke for a real honky tonk experience. This is the place where you will see real cowboys, it’s so much fun.

If you’re in need of a little pampering, where will you go? What do you recommend having done?
Jennifer at Milk & Honey is an eyebrow sculpting genius and they’re having some pretty fabulous holiday specials!

Where will you be seen shopping?
I love walking the shops on South Congress — especially this time of year with all of the holiday décor! I start at Jo’s coffee for the proper fueling and then make my way to Kendra Scott for jewelry, Maya for a cute dress and South Congress Bookstore to try and find an inspiring cookbook. I also love Parts & Labor for gift ideas because they only sell items from local designers.

If you’re having a date night, what romantic spot will you go to and what will you order?
Justine’s, hands down. Candle lit tables, outdoor chandeliers, and vinyl records playing from the bar play make you feel like you are at a café in Paris. We always start with their escargot and finish with the crème brulee. I personally love the pork chop, but my boyfriend is partial to the steak frites.

What’s Austin’s best-kept secret?
Whip In. Driving by it looks like an average convenience store, but when you walk in you discover an amazing local bar with tons of microbrews on tap and a delicious Indian inspired menu. They have live music on the weekends and a very charming outside seating area for when the weather is right.

How will you end your weekend?
This weekend is the lighting of Austin’s famous Zilker Tree! If you haven’t been to the tree lighting before, definitely check it out. It encompasses everything that is Austin — live music, food trailers and great people! Did I mention it’s a great photo opp as well?

Kevin Smothers, AMOA-Arthouse and Austin Social Planner

Kevin SmothersUntitled.jpg
Kevin Smothers is the director of marketing and PR at AMOA-Arthouse and also the founder and editorial director of Austin Social Planner. He moved to Austin in 1998 after a stint in Los Angeles.

How will you start your Friday night?
Tonight, I’ll be coming off a crazy (like most weeks for a PR person) so I’m going to start at Ranch 616 for a strong sip of Ranch Water. It’s one of my favorite tequila drinks. Afterward, we’ll walk over to ACL Live to see the Swedish pop-chanteuse Lykke Li tape an episode of “Austin City Limits.”

If you go to a happy hour, which bar will you go to? What will you order?
I really love the happy hour at Icenhauer’s on Rainey Street. It’s the perfect mix of Texas bunglaow style mixed with Palm Springs modernism. What will I order? Something with Bourbon in it to be sure.

What band will you see this weekend?
That’s a loaded question this weekend because of Fun Fun Fun Fest. High on my list are M83, Diplo, Passion Pit, MNDR, and maybe a little Henry Rollins and Public Enemy for old times sake!

What’s your favorite Austin band aside from who you will see this weekend?
I think Speak are great…and I think they’re going places. Watch out world! Of course, I also like Ghostland and am very fond of an electronic duo called BK and Mr. E, who put on a pretty amazing show for a two man band.

What is your favorite venue to watch a show?
Without a doubt, ACL Live at the Moody Theater is the best large venue in town right now. Nobody else compares. However, I love La Zona Rosa and am absolutely devastated to hear that it could soon go the way of other legendary venues.

Where will you go for late night eats after your night out?
24 Diner without a doubt.

Where can we find you when you are craving barbecue?
Everyone is so hot on the place of the moment, but I still love Sam’s BBQ on E. 12th St. Otherwise, it’s up 71W to R.O.’s or Coopers in Llano.

Where can we find you when you are craving Tex-Mex?
That’s a loaded question. Maudie’s is the default because of proximity, but I enjoy Vivo more than any other place…maybe because of the salsa?

Where can we find you grabbing a margarita?
Vivo wins again for their Cesars concoction, but I’ve also become a fan of the delicious margarita with habanero simple syrup at Takoba. They make it with mango puree, too, but I prefer that they hold the mango.

If you go to the lake, what will you do and which lake will you go to?
Lake Austin without a doubt. I think once you go on a boat outing there, you’ll never really have any interest in being on a boat anywhere else.

What is your favorite place to get brunch?
Lambert’s on Second St. You may have to be wheeled out of there, but is that really a bad thing after a Hanger Steak Benedict?

What is your favorite outdoor spot to enjoy a sunny Saturday?
The Great Lawn at Zilker Park is pretty hard to beat. Especially if the weather is agreeable.

What’s your one “must-do” for visitors to Austin (this weekend or in general)?
Mount Bonnell used to be my go-to, but now I send a lot of people to Town Lake because you can get to pretty much anything from there, be it restaurants, shopping, or a bar.

If you’re in need of a little pampering, where will you go? What do you recommend having done?
A massage at Mecca will definitely transport me to another place.

Where will you be seen shopping?
SoCo has the best guys shops (STAG, Service), and I’m also loving the strip of shops on North Loop these days, including Blackbird.

If you’re having a date night, what romantic spot will you go to and what will you order?
Wink is always great…they can do anything with foie gras. Paired with a glass of Sauterne, of course.

What’s Austin’s best-kept secret?
The old-school Grill and soda fountain at Nau’s pharmacy on West Lynn.

How will you end your Austin weekend? Where will you go and what will you do?
I like to wind the weekend down at my place with a home cooked meal, a few friends, and a bottle or two of wine. Nothing is better.

Rocky Reyna, Este Vato and Gran Sonido Music Group

Este Vato 014.jpg
Rocky Reyna is a native of Hebbronville, Texas, who quickly fell in love with the diversity and fast paced energy of the music scene when he moved to Austin. A seasoned musician, Rocky plays bass in Este Vato, a seven-piece Latin-fusion ensemble formed in 2008. The band’s most recent effort, “The Morningside EP,” was released in September. Rocky is also a principal at Gran Sonido Music Group, a collective of individuals who work to provide resources to members of the Austin music community.

How will you start your Friday night?
I will be working at Beauty Bar tonight, So I’ll start my night by helping my fellow co-workers prepare for the evening and whatever it may bring. Beauty Bar’s crowd fluctuates and differs on a nightly basis, so we have to be prepared for the good, the bad, and the ugly … at all times.

If you go to a happy hour, which bar will you go to? What will you order?
I don’t really do “Happy Hour” per se, but once in a while, I do like to start the evening off early with some great bites and drinks. And when I do, you’ll typically find me at The Side Bar, Yellow Jacket Social Club or Volstead.

What band will you see this weekend?
Well, I have a show this Saturday at Frank. So I will have the pleasure of seeing Los De Esta Noche and Trio Trez perform before we go on stage. (I also heard it’s going to be a KILLER show, so I suggest you attend.)

What’s your favorite Austin band aside from who you will see this weekend?
This is a hard question, only because most of my favorite bands ARE from Austin. But at this time, I’d have to say Eagle Claw. Those guys will blow your mind. On a “Latin” tip, I’d have to go with Maneja Beto. They move me. (literally)

What is your favorite venue to watch a show?
I love watching shows at Red 7. The sound there is incredible and it’s a wide open space, so no matter where you are standing, you have both a good vision of the performance and a good sound.

Where will you go for late night eats after your night out?
I usually hit up Heros Gyros on the corner of East Seventh and I-35 or Rockin Rolls on East Sixth and Waller, both are AMAZING places to grab some late night grub. Oh, and the occasional Whataburger.

Where can we find you when you are craving BBQ?
Well I used to have to drive to Lockhart for some good BBQ, but just recently I discovered the JMueller BBQ Trailer on S. First Street. If you haven’t had their BBQ yet, you absolutely NEED to give a try. Their brisket is amazing and their ribs….the meat just falls right off the bone. (my mouth is watering just typing this).

Where can we find you when you are craving Tex-Mex?
In all honesty, I’m not much of a “Tex-Mex” guy. If I’m craving Mexican food, I will hit up Habaneros for that. My girlfriend, on the other hand, LOVES Tex-Mex. So sometimes we’ll hit up Chuy’s, which is good as well.

Where can we find you grabbing a margarita?
I usually go to Tres Amigos on Slaughter and Manchaca. Their margaritas are incredible! They’ll make you feel woozy for sure, but they taste so good.

If you go to the lake, what will you do and which lake will you go to?
I absolutely LOVE going for walks/jogs at Town Lake. It’s probably my favorite thing to do in Austin. The downtown view, the scenery, the fresh air….it doesn’t get better than that.

What is your favorite place to get brunch?
For brunch, I usually go to Habaneros. Although, I’ve been trying to get to Yellow Jacket Social Club for brunch for a while now. Everyone is always telling me about how awesome their brunch is, so I think I will give that a try.

What is your favorite outdoor spot to enjoy a sunny Saturday?
Barton Springs, without a doubt. There is nothing like going for a jog at Town Lake and then going for a dip at Barton Springs (followed by a slight case of hypothermia).

What trails will you hit this weekend?
You know, it’s been a long time since I’ve done the trail at Mary Moore Searight Park. My brother and I used to ride those trails religiously each weekend. Now that it’s starting to cool down a bit, it’s the perfect weather to jump back on that mountain bike.

What’s your one “must-do” for visitors to Austin (this weekend or in general)?
Go out and enjoy some good ol’ live music. Austin has so much live music to offer. No matter what your preference in music is, you will find it.

Where will you be seen shopping?
You can see me shopping at Buffalo Exchange on the drag. I’ve also recently discovered a skateshop called No Comply near the ACC Rio Grande campus. They have an awesome selection of shirts and skate shoes.

If you’re having a date night, what romantic spot will you go to and what will you order?
My girlfriend and I love going to Moonshine. It’s not necessarily a “romantic” place per se, but it’s a place that we both enjoy going to and eating at. And to me, THAT is “romantic.”

What’s Austin’s best-kept secret?
Austin’s best-kept secret is Rockin Rolls, at the corner of E. Sixth Street and Waller. Their stuffed rolls are amazing and are named after rock ‘n’ roll legends like the “Janis Joplin” and the “James Hetfield.” AND to top it off, they serve Kool-Aid!! Now that’s genius.

How will you end your Austin weekend? Where will you go and what will you do?
I will spend my Sunday morning jogging at Town Lake, and enjoy the rest of the day at home. Relaxing, and enjoying Netflix.

Julie Wernersbach, BookPeople

photo[1].JPG
Julie Wernersbach, who works in the marketing department at BookPeople, originally hails from Long Island, where she worked at another independent bookstore. She’s called Austin home since January 2011 and wonders what could possibly have taken her so long to get here.

How will you start your Friday night?
Friday night starts at G’Raj Mahal for some seriously good Indian food Austin-style, which means from a food trailer. It’s in the Rainey Street District — the perfect location —so afterward you can stroll down the street for a drink in one of the old houses that’s been converted into a bar.

If you go to a happy hour, which bar will you go to? What will you order?
Tiniest. (The Tiniest Bar in Texas, on Fifth Street just off Lamar.) This is BookPeople’s go-to bar for happy hour (or any hour, really.) The margaritas are good, and if you’re with a big group, the pitchers are a good way to go. We love Tiniest because it’s close to the store, the deals are good (phenomenal during Happy Hour), and you can sit outdoors and occasionally see people practice fire throwing.

What band will you see this weekend?
Saint Vincent (technically, Monday, so we’ll call it a long weekend.) They’re playing ACL Live at the Moody Theater. She’s originally from Houston and one of my coworkers actually went to high school with her. If you haven’t heard hew new album yet, “Strange Mercy,” get ye to Waterloo already and check it out.

What’s your favorite Austin band aside from who you will see this weekend?
This recommendation comes from my boyfriend, who is admittedly more into the music scene than I am. He goes for either TV Torso or Sunset. They’re both bands formed by former members of Soundteam. Local and good.

What is your favorite venue to watch a show?
The Parish. It’s intimate, really easy to see the performers on stage, and the sound system is awesome.

Where will you go for late-night eats after your night out?
Magnolia. Tons of variety, friendliest waitstaff (in a city full of friendly wait staff) and they’re open all night. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, you can’t go wrong there.

Where can we find you when you are craving BBQ?
I’m vegetarian, so I can’t help you. For an awesome veggie burger while your friends get their meat fill, you should definitely hit up Phil’s Icehouse. Best. Fries. Ever.

Where can we find you when you are craving Tex-Mex?
Z Tejas. It’s close enough to the store to grab lunch there and everything is to die for.

Where can we find you grabbing a margarita?
Tiniest. We really don’t deviate….

What is your favorite place to get brunch?
Kerbey Lane. For me, really, brunch is all about eating breakfast when I should be eating lunch, so it’s all about the Gingerbread Pancakes at Kerbey Lane.

What is your favorite outdoor spot to enjoy a sunny Saturday?
I love riding my bike around this town, so on Saturday, I want to ride down Shoal Creek Trail and either hit up Zilker Park or Barton Springs.

What trails will you hit this weekend?
Shoal Creek Trail, on my bike.

What’s your one “must-do” for visitors to Austin (this weekend or in general)?
Barton Springs. There’s nothing like feeling the chill of that water! And nothing like having a natural spring run right through your city. It’s also great for people-watching.

Where will you be seen shopping?
BookPeople! And South Congress. I love the funky shops — and there’s a great place to get a good deal on shoes called Goodie Two Shoes. And when those dogs are tired from all the shopping, you’ve got Home Slice right there, Amy’s Ice Cream, and one of my favorite places to grab a drink in this town (when I’m not hitting Tiniest) — South Congress Cafe. They have great weekday deals on mojitos and margaritas.

If you’re having a date night, what romantic spot will you go to and what will you order?
Chez Nous. My boyfriend and I just went there to celebrate my six-month anniversary. It’s a quaint French bistro right off Sixth Street. Their Prixe Fix menu is perfect. It was absolutely the best meal I’ve ever eaten. Every bite was delectable. I actually slowed down just to savor it. Get the salad with the poached egg and the chocolate mousse — do not walk out of that building without tasting the chocolate mousse.

What’s Austin’s best-kept secret?
Blue Dahlia. It’s my other favorite romantic spot. Good, locally grown, all natural food made expertly. Everything comes with fresh baked bread. The mushroom crepes are out of this world. There’s plenty for vegetarians, vegans and carnivores alike. It’s on the east side.

What is your favorite place to go with a good book?
Zilker Park. I love lying on the grass and reading under that big, blue Texas sky.

What coffee shop has the best couches for curling up with a book?
The Hideout on Congress is one of my favorite coffeeshops in this town. I go there to read and write a lot. They have a great selection of snacks and aren’t generally as crowded as a lot of other coffeeshops. I can pretty much always find a seat.

What is the best kept secret to exploring Book People?
The Bargain Books section. We have bargain books on displays throughout the store, but also have a big section right by the registers and also up on our second floor. You can find a lot of awesome books for cheap.

How will you end your Austin weekend? Where will you go and what will you do?
Catching a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse. Beer, hummus platter and whatever they’ve got playing is the perfect way to prepare for Monday.

Danika Boyle, Petite Peche & Co.

Danika Boyle.jpeg

Danika Boyle began her love affair with food at a young age in her grandmother’s South Texas kitchen. That farm - dense with mango and citrus trees, irises and lillies - is where Danika was taught to cook, and where she learned to see food as both the medicine of life and perhaps its greater influence, as a connection to loved ones.

Danika studied at the Sorbonne University in Paris, where she fell in love with France, its beauty and the culture of food, life and family. Afterward she moved to NYC, where she and her husband, music producer David Boyle, entertained frequently in their small West Village flat around a vintage Steinway and a two-burner stove. In 2007 she and David renovated and settled into a 1930s gospel church in East Austin. Shortly after, she started Petite Peche & Co., a company which offers culinary tours and private stays in France and hosts a series of musical and literary salons in Austin and beyond. The child who got lessons from her feisty grandmother lives on; Danika is a perpetual student, forever curious, forever picking up secrets and ideas about life and cooking.

How will you start your Friday night?
Most likely by finishing a long lunch at at Enoteca/Vespiao with friends. The steady stream of locals who arrive between 12 and 6 p.m. creates a gorgeous little immovable feast. Our own Cafe de Flore, without a doubt, and if you can score a seat at the bar for lunch, you will make friends with the best.

If you go to a happy hour, which bar will you go to?
If it’s an intimate conversation with friends, Z Tejas for their great patio and food, but if it’s the beginning of a longer night, Perla’s.

What band will you see this weekend?
Kat Edmonson.

What’s your favorite Austin band aside from who you will see this weekend?
Oh there are so many talented people here — Sahara Smith, Tosca, Balmorhea, Dan Dyer, Amy Cook, Ghostland Observatory to name a few.

What is your favorite venue to watch a show?
Continental Gallery for the intimacy, Moody Theatre (ACL Live) for the gorgeous sound and luxurious setting, Momo’s for the outdoor effect and Paul’s hospitality and Antone’s for its legendary ghosts.

Where will you go for late night eats after your night out?
Late Late night: Justines; here, I’m already home. Pierre or Oliver will play a great selection of vinyl music while Jardine quotes Baudelaire bed-time stories. It’s a magical setting.

Where can we find you when you are craving BBQ?
City Market in Luling or Smitty’s in Lockhart.

Where can we find you when you are craving Tex-Mex?
Considering I crave Tex-Mex the day after a late night, if I am able to drive, Polvos for their fish fajitas and ancho salsa; if I can’t, Los Comales for their caldo de pollo (East Seventh and Webberville) or Taqueria La Playa #2 for their ceviche tostadas ( E. Seventh near Springdale).

Where can we find you when you are craving a Margarita?
The bar or patio at Guero’s; their Paloma margarita is the color of the ocean in Tulum.

If you go to the lake, what will you do and which lake will you go to?
Lake Austin for the beautiful views. I prefer to act as a hood ornament. I’m not so interested in being dragged through cold water — or rendered topless — by a boat for sport.

What is your favorite place to get brunch?
Perla’s for Fried Oyters or an Ahi Tuna Melt and a bottle of Rose — to be shared of course!

What is your favorite outdoor spot to enjoy a sunny Saturday?
Town Lake if its less than 95 degrees. Otherwise in a bookstore.

What trails will you hit this weekend?
If that can be considered a trail, Congress between Gibson and Milton. Starting with lunch at Perla’s, Hopdoddy or Guero’s, then its on to the SOCO book store: which is a perfect example of what makes this town so special. The beautifully curated selection is an tremendous gift to Austinites and visitors alike. Their window display is more inspiring than Bergdorf’s. Afterward, a quick pop in to Enoteca for an espresso — a perfect ending to the trail.

What’s your one “must-do” for visitors to Austin?
LBJ Library.

If you’re in need of a little pampering, where will you go? What do you recommend having done?
Justine’s, for reasons stated above. Pampering for me comes in the form of being with great friends whom you cherish. That and I’m a tad ticklish.

Where will you be seen shopping?
SOCO books and Central Market.

If you’re having a date night, what romantic spot will you go to and what will you order?
Vespaio. Whatever the kitchen or Daniel suggest. The thing I find most endearing about the great chefs in this town is that they still aim to make people happy with their food. Its possible to be excellent and successful without being pretentious. Which says a lot about our environment.

What’s Austin’s best-kept secret?
That there isn’t one. Its up to us to enjoy ourselves, wherever we are, in the end. And if you know how to accomplish that you will find all the hidden gems that we as locals love about this town and maybe discover a few yourself.

How will you end your Austin weekend? Where will you go and what will you do?
Most likely at Din Ho in North Austin with my 3-year-old son. He loves the Wonton Soup and Peking Duck. Then curled up with him on the couch reading Dr Seuss.

Jeff and Mardy Chen, PURE Bikram Yoga

PBY 810.JPG

Mardy and Jeff moved to Austin from New York City in 2002 and opened their first Bikram Yoga studio in Westlake. Their fourth location will open in South Austin on William Cannon and Mopac this fall. While they eat, live, and breathe yoga, they still find time to enjoy what is unique about Austin.

Together they have co-founded PURE Action Inc., a nonprofit organization bringing the ancient benefits of yoga to mainstream medicine through research and education. Look out for more community yoga offerings through this unique organization. Mardy also co-founded “Pure Woman Connect - Being the Boss is Sexy,” an Austin-based connection of women CEO’s.

How will you start your Friday night?
Believe it or not, we’ll unwind the day with a 105 degree PURE Bikram Yoga advanced class in the afternoon to get ready. Detox before you retox!

If you go to a happy hour, which bar will you go to? What will you order?
After yoga, Tacos ‘N Tequila next door serves a great mojito. Paul and Tim make the best ones in town! If more hydration is needed, we’ll visit Willis a few blocks down at the Mean-Eyed Cat.

What band will you see this weekend?
Nowhere else but in Austin will you find a group with the caliber of musicians like Atash performing at the Cherrywood Coffeehouse. Atash is performing this Sunday (Sept. 25). Mohammad Firoozi’s chilling vocals and John Moon’s violin lead this unbelievable collection of musical talent. If you’ve never heard them before, prepare to be blown away.

What’s your favorite Austin band aside from who you will see this weekend?
You can’t miss with Bob Schneider at the Saxon Pub on Monday nights. We also love to find Phoebe Hunt and whatever her latest music project is when she comes back to town. She plays a lot at Momo’s and at the Saxon Pub on South Lamar.

What is your favorite venue to watch a show?
The Saxon Pub is tiny, cheap, and all-things Austin. Although Mardy is all about hip-hop, she caved in to Jeff’s tastes and went to see Garrison Keillor at ACL Live at the Moody Theater. If you haven’t been there yet, check it out. There is not a bad seat in the house.

Where will you go for late night eats after your night out?
24 Diner serves a fantastic veggie sausage for her and a delicious home-made lamb burger for him on challah bread. Other than that, it’s best not to eat so late at night. You’ll regret it the next day.

Where can we find you when you are craving BBQ?
County Line on Bee Caves has great extra-moist brisket to go with their selection of sides and scenic Hill Country view, but for quick take-home or for large group event feeding, Rudy’s BBQ is quick, convenient, and reliable.

Where can we find you when you are craving Tex-Mex?
Chuy’s on Barton Springs. Period. End of story. Food is always piping hot and the service impeccable! The Boom-Boom sauce and Hatch Green Chili sauce go with everything on the menu.

Where can we find you grabbing a margarita?
After a Westlake yoga class, either at Berryhill next door or across the street at Maudie’s on 360. Enjoy the sunset.

If you go to the lake, what will you do and which lake will you go to?
Jeff became obsessed with wake-surfing on Lake Austin this past summer. Best thing is to avoid the crowds with a weekday early-morning or late-evening surf session. You’ll have the lake to yourself. After late-night runs, Hula Hut or Abel’s on the Lake help you unwind.

What is your favorite place to get brunch?
Lamberts serves the most unique barbecue in town - Coriander and Maple Crusted Ribs and Brown Sugar & Coffee Brisket.

What is your favorite outdoor spot to enjoy a sunny Saturday?
Afternoons at our Downtown studio are spent on the outside patio mingling with students, teachers, and friends, sipping cold ZICO coconut water. Yoga social hours.

What trails will you hit this weekend?
Mardy used to run Town Lake all through her college years at UT. Since she started Bikram Yoga, the running steadily declined, but an occasional walk-around is always a treat.

What’s your one ‘must-do’ for visitors to Austin (this weekend or in general)?
Take a ride through the Texas Hill Country to the original Salt Lick Barbecue. BYOB, enjoy the outdoor live music, and take home a souvenir bottle of sauce.

If you’re in need of a little pampering, where will you go? What do you recommend having done?
Mecca’s Aromatherapy Massage followed by an energizing eucalyptus steam.

Where will you be seen shopping?
Mardy loves the Clarksville and Downtown locally-owned stores, especially W3LL People, By George and Bettysport. For vintage clothing, check out Feathers; for designer consignment, check out Moss.

If you’re having a date night, what romantic spot will you go to and what will you order?
Nothing beats dinner at Uchi. A must-have is the machi cure (yucca crisps and smoked yellowtail sashimi), but you must save room for their one-of-a-kind desserts. Try the brown butter sorbet with ginger.

What’s Austin’s best-kept secret?
Hot Boiled Crawfish and Pho serves fusion Vietnamese and Cajun cuisine. Teresa, a Bikram Yogini, serves up the most amazing Crawfish Fried Rice and Seafood Hotpot. Mardy’s favorite is the Crawfish Pho. We don’t know anywhere else you can get food like this!
