Megan Bristol
Megan Bristol hails from California, but Austin has her heart. As a true foodie, Megan has been conquering Austin one restaurant at a time and is loving every minute of it! Megan lives in the SoCo area of Austin and loves the walkability of her neighborhood. How will you start your Friday night?
After a long week at work, Friday night is always date night with my boyfriend. We’re going to start things off with picking out our Christmas tree this week and then heading to our current quest with food trailers! We recently tasked ourselves with trying every food truck in Austin because we can get amazing, chef prepared meals at ridiculously low prices in a beautiful location: outdoors! Every trailer has a BYOB policy so I always stop at Austin Wine Merchant on my way home from work to pick up a new bottle. They have an amazing staff that always helps me find a delicious bottle. Our favorite trailers so far have been G’raj Mahal & Odd duck.
If you go to a happy hour, which bar will you go to?
I love going to Haddington’s on West Sixth because they serve my favorite Austin cocktail: The Corpse Revivor (order it with a cherry in it and you won’t be disappointed). Only a limited number of bars even know what this drink is, but Haddington’s version is my favorite!
What band will you see this weekend?
There is never a shortage of live music here. Sunday night we are seeing the National at Austin City Music Hall.
What is your favorite venue to watch a show?
I love Stubb’s. You get to watch great music under the stars, it doesn’t get much better.
Where will you go for late night eats after your night out?
P.Terry’s, yum!
Where can we find you when you are craving barbecue?
Rudy’s is my go-to barbecue spot because I like a sweeter sauce and their cream corn tastes better than most chocolate.
Where can we find you grabbing a margarita? Freddie’s on South First. If it is over 100 degrees outside, they are only $1.99! Their back porch is dog friendly and shaded by a beautiful oak tree. It’s very picturesque.
If you go to the lake, what will you do and which lake will you go to?
I love running on Town Lake, but if you have boat access I definitely recommend Lake Austin for a great real estate tour.
What is your favorite place to get brunch?
Takoba on the East side. I can’t get enough of their homemade chips!
What is your favorite outdoor spot to enjoy a sunny Saturday?
If the weather will allow it, we’re heading to the flagship Whole Foods store on Lamar for a little roof top ice skating and Christmas spirit! When it’s a little warmer out, Hamilton Pool is an Austin gem. It’s 15 minutes outside the city, but feels a world away.
What’s your one “must-do” for visitors to Austin (this weekend or in general)?
Go dancing at the Broken Spoke for a real honky tonk experience. This is the place where you will see real cowboys, it’s so much fun.
If you’re in need of a little pampering, where will you go? What do you recommend having done?
Jennifer at Milk & Honey is an eyebrow sculpting genius and they’re having some pretty fabulous holiday specials!
Where will you be seen shopping?
I love walking the shops on South Congress — especially this time of year with all of the holiday décor! I start at Jo’s coffee for the proper fueling and then make my way to Kendra Scott for jewelry, Maya for a cute dress and South Congress Bookstore to try and find an inspiring cookbook. I also love Parts & Labor for gift ideas because they only sell items from local designers.
If you’re having a date night, what romantic spot will you go to and what will you order?
Justine’s, hands down. Candle lit tables, outdoor chandeliers, and vinyl records playing from the bar play make you feel like you are at a café in Paris. We always start with their escargot and finish with the crème brulee. I personally love the pork chop, but my boyfriend is partial to the steak frites.
What’s Austin’s best-kept secret?
Whip In. Driving by it looks like an average convenience store, but when you walk in you discover an amazing local bar with tons of microbrews on tap and a delicious Indian inspired menu. They have live music on the weekends and a very charming outside seating area for when the weather is right.
How will you end your weekend?
This weekend is the lighting of Austin’s famous Zilker Tree! If you haven’t been to the tree lighting before, definitely check it out. It encompasses everything that is Austin — live music, food trailers and great people! Did I mention it’s a great photo opp as well?
