Ryan Schibi, The Highball
Ryan Schibi is from Harlingen, Texas, but moved to Austin in 1995 after high school. Ryan began working with the Alamo Drafthouse in 2005 and immediately knew it was where he wanted to be, as it is a place to watch your ideas come to life for others. Ryan transfered to The Highball at its inception to run the cocktail program and was then promoted to General Manager. Ryan feels that Austin is the perfect place to explore his love of food, music, spirits and open-mindedness.
How will you start your Friday night?
Since time off is so rare for my wife and myself, we tend to “do it up” when the opportunity presents itself, currently Uchi is a favorite haunt for us to begin our Friday night.
What band will you see this weekend?
I’m saving my music time for Gene Ween at The Parish on the 29th, but with ACL this weekend there will be a lot of great shows!
What’s your favorite Austin band aside from who you will see this weekend?
I have to go with Dale Watson— always fun for honky tonk. I also try to catch Baron Grod when they play to get my metal, ambient fix. I also like A Live One because they are a great Phish cover band that resides here in Austin.
What is your favorite venue to watch a show?
I’ve seen some great shows at Stubbs but always hear great things about the new ACL-Live at the Moody Theater.
Where can we find you when you are craving BBQ?
Gotta go with Franklins BBQ!
Where can we find you when you are craving Tex-Mex?
Habeneros — excellent food and service. Try the steak ranchero, it’s spicy and incredible!
What is your favorite place to get brunch?
Trudys, South Congress Cafe and Habenero’s are all pretty darn good for a sitdown brunch. Breakfast taco’s from Maria’s generally works better for the family though.
What is your favorite outdoor spot to enjoy a sunny Saturday?
Krause Springs is beautiful, but i find myself in the backyard grilling when the weather is just right.
If you’re having a date night, what romantic spot will you go to and what will you order?
Uchi and it isnt even a thought. They are hands down the best ambiance and food in Austin. The wife and I will generally splurge on some toro (fish gold), the biendo which is a roll with shrimp and frozen grapes, tako pops are fun and the pork belly is killer!
What’s Austin’s best-kept secret?
The attitude of the people that live here is something I took away after my first few visits and ultimately caused me to want to move here. It’s hard to explain but once you experience it you’ll know what i am talking about!
