Chattin’ with Clay Aiken

So it seems we’ve lucked our way into a 15-minute phone interview with Clay Aiken Tuesday.

He’s making the rounds to promote his new CD, which hits stores May 6.

What should we ask? We know you’ve got some really great questions, so send ‘em our way.

Post your queries for Clay in the comments section below, or shoot an e-mail to gdinges@statesman.com.

Then look for our writeup — and, hopefully, an audio recap — later this week.

Idol chatter …

The show airs at 9 a.m. on Fox 7.

Question for Clay:

Does “On My Way Here” resemble,as a concept, the CD that you and Jaymes Foster worked on in 2005-2006? The songs you have selected for this one are outstanding. Do you like them better than those chosen for the earlier CD?

Ask him who chose On My Way Here for the first single over one of the uptempo songs.

Ask him when he anticipates touring to support this album.

PLEASE stop putting yourself down, Clay, even in jest. Your subconscious, as psychologists will tell you, does not know when you’re kidding, setting up a sad self-image. Try the positive, please! Life will get a lot easier. Love, Gwyn

Hi Clay!

Congratulations on a successful run in “Spamalot”!! I saw it five times. Not nearly as much as I wanted to! I need to win the lottery. LOL. You were great in the show!! I loved “You Won’t Succeed on Broadway if you haven’t got a Jew”. Well, I’m a Jew and I was on Broadway (to see you), so there!! You did succeed!! LOL

Anyway, my question is…what is the first thing that you will do when you walk in the door to your home in Raleigh after “Spamalot” is over on May 4th and the cd release is done on May 6th? I bet I can answer for you. Your going to hit the couch and chill for about 6 months! LOL.

See you on tour in the fall. Please come back to NYC. WE LOVED HAVING YOU!!

Jodie

P.S. When you do the tour again, please do the meet & greets again! I never had the opportunity to win one. Waiting patiently. LOL

Hey Clay, Did you have to do any special pre-conditioning for your role as Sir Robin in Spamalot?

Will you ever let your natural color hair grow out? Simply asking because I absolutely love the red hair! Also, can you please keep the sideburns?

What is the one cut on “On My Way Here” that mostly reflects your five years in the record business?

As a special education teacher, do you believe that Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a real diagnosis or something that has been labeled on children who simply misbehave in class?

Thank you for your time Clay. I am looking forward to your tour to promote your new cd.

Hi Clay,

Spamalot was wonderful and the snippets from the new album sound fabulous. I can't wait for the 6th!!!!

I was wondering if, after promoting "On My Way Here", you plan on trying to get to New Zealand, or go to see the Pyramids like you told me at Christmas that you would REALLY like to do? I think after all of your hard work, you NEED a vacation. Are you planning on taking one? You don't have to say where you are going...but, I do hope you get some well-deserved REST!

ok before I ask my question, I just wanted to say that those of you who think that Clay’s modesty is “putting himself down” and “doesn’t gain him any fans,” I highly doubt he says those things ONLY because he think it would gain him fans. He’s a humble guy and he’s not going to change that part of his personality just because a few fans think it’s annoying!

anyway, here’s my question:

Clay, what is your LEAST favorite part of creating an album? thanks, we love you :)

P.S. Karla, Clay’s already engaged to me ;) (hehe)

So many of us feel connected to you since we have followed you from the very beginning. You used to speak often of how you try to stay grounded to the person you once were. I would like to know about Clay’s involvement with the President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities. Since being appointed by President George W. What has he done?

With UNICEF, you’ve been able to bring attention to humanitarian crises throughout the world that are otherwise ignored by cash-conscious news outlets. Often, it is only though the use of famous ambassadors that NGOs can shine a light on things which the media and politicians would rather ignore.

The public is known to respond to such activism with ridicule, regardless of the celebrity or the cause. Do you find it difficult to be an enthusiastic activist without being accused of being a loudmouth who can’t possibly know what he’s talking about? How would you respond to such criticisms?

I would like to know if Clay is working on writing any songs. “Lover All Alone” is amazing - I would love to hear what else he writes himself.

Also, is his original contract with RCA over? This will be his 5th release if you count the Walmart EP. It has also been 5 years since he signed the original contract. Lots of curiousity about how that changes his bargaining power with the Label.

I understand that record execs pick the singles for albums they release. Many artists have complained that their labels made poor choices. I was wondering what Clay’s choice would be for a lead single for this very important & very personal CD? I happen to think one of the uptempo tracks would have been more of a head-turner for those who think he is nothing but a ballad singer.

For Clay:

What specific enhancements from your own creativity were you able to give to the character of Sir Robin?

Were you able to establish friends in the rather “closed society” of theatre with whom you intend to stay in touch?

If you had to do Spamalot all over again, would there be anything that you would alter or omit?

NOT A QUESTION: As an aside, I see a couple of fans have asked that you don’t put down on yourself. I agree. I know you are not prone to brag and do not see yourself as fans do. This is OK. However, if some compliments you on your accomplishments or your fine, good looks, just say, “Thanks for thinking so.” In this way you don’t have to agree, but you can respond in a positive way.

Love and prayers always.

All the girls think u r so hawt and the guys r jealous of you so they make rude, obnoxious remarks, but i know they r just envious of your sex appeal and we pay NO attention. OMG, if u performed at the prom I would just die. U R the very best Clay, OMG we all love U!!!@!@@! Please say YES, u will come and sing at our prom. Lovingly and always ur fan, Julia Addison High, AL

Hi Clay. Did you get the copy’s of all my books I sent you last year? If yes have you had time to read any of them? I have nothing but good things to say about you in the memoir. Hope to meet you in person one day. Take time for you.
