Haynes has the Allman genes

I’m absolutely convinced that Warren Haynes is a government-issued clone of Duane and Greg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band. Haynes is the replacement guitarist for the late Duane and he filled his position without a shred of noticeable difference. Well, maybe Haynes did add a bit of length with his epic solos that seemed to fret (so to speak) on every musical possibility. Maybe that was because he was competing with another guitar legend — Dickey Betts. But Haynes put up a good fight. Not only did his maverick guitar skills in “Midnight Riderâ€? and “One Way Outâ€? sound the same Friday as they did on the albums in the 1970s, but Haynes’s die-hard voice was nearly identical to founding brother Gregg’s. And his mane of grey hair certainly didn’t hurt in helping Haynes fit in with the rustic look of the most archetypal southern rock band in history.

Well….while I certainly agree that Warren Haynes is a perfect fit for the Allman Brothers, there’s a few things to comment on here….

Dickey Betts! Hasn’t been in the band since 2000, so Mr, Haynes wasn’t competing with Mr. Betts, now was he? The other guitarist is Derek Trucks, nephew of Allman Brothers drummer and founding member Butch Trucks.

Grey Hair! Better get over to the optometrist for an eye exam! Warren Haynes, while he is in his forties, does not have grey hair….long and brown it is….

Huh? I thing Jeff was standing so far back, he missed the victor in every guitar duel in the Bros. near-perfect hour-long set: Derrick Trucks. Haynes is a step above most guitar slingers out there, but Trucks’unique, otherworldly style and chops makes for an infinitely better fan experience. And the fans knew it too, giving him all the applause. It’s down to the chill factor—Haynes produces little, while Trucks gives you chicken skin from his solo’s first note to its last.

Don’t know what McRary was smoking but that wasn’t Dickey Betts on stage; as others have pointed out, that was Warren Haynes. Bets hasn’t been with the band for years. And I have to agree with the other poster who said that Derek Trucks blew WH off the stage. Trucks is one of those rare guitarists like Carlos Santana; you watch them play and you know there’s SO much more going on than just a guy playing his a*s of. It’s more like he’s channeeling God or something. He’s definitely off on another plane.

Quite, wrong, Jeff. Warren Haynes, is excellent, but he’s replacing Dickie Betts (sad to see he’s not there, poor drunken soul). Young Derek Trucks, who’s been the new Duane Allman since the late 90’s and has quite a solo resume to boot (remember his gig at the tender age of 15 at the old Antone’s)grows better and better and channels brother Duane with calm aplomb. Move closer, amigo and wipe the dust from those specs! BW

Readers, I’m terribly sorry about the obvious mixup — Derek Trucks deserves an apology too. I appreciate the corrections and I realize that I’ll have to research more carefully next time I’m reviewing a band. Humbly, Jeff McCrary

“Haynes is the replacement guitarist for the late Duane and he filled his position without a shred of noticeable difference.”

Sorry Jeff. Having listened to WH many times and having seen Skydog plus listened to the pre-71 albums hundreds of times I can say without a doubt NO ONE can replace Duane’s sound. However, I did see Frank Zappa do an exceptional version of “Whipping Post” that when closing your eyes it could of been Duane.

“Not only did his maverick guitar skills in “Midnight Riderâ€? and “One Way Outâ€? sound the same Friday as they did on the albums in the 1970s.”

See comment above…Duane was one of a kind. By the way no knock against Warren, he just isn’t Duane…sound and all.
