Laurels bequeathed on Austin artists
Critics pass out annual awards
Monday, June 05, 2006During an informal ceremony Monday night at Cap City Comedy Club, local reviewers presented their annual Austin Critics Table Awards, honoring more than 45 artists in theater, dance, art and classical music.
Steven Tomlinson netted the prize for outstanding new play for "American Fiesta," which will be re-staged at the State Theatre in July.
Lee Eddy nabbed the comedy queen crown for her performance in "The Santaland Diaries" and "Intergalactic Nemesis," while Zachary Scott Theatre's production of "Urinetown: The Musical" got the nod for outstanding musical. In the musical actress category, Laura Powell won for "Annie Get Your Gun."
Deborah Roberts and Bale Creek Allen were recognized as outstanding visual artists of the year.
Ballet Austin's Eric Midgley and Inga Lujerenko were named as best dancers while José Luis Bustamante took the award as for choreography.
Opera singers Keely Rhodes and Nathan Berg also got top nods. Composer Dan Welcher was cited for his Symphony No. 4.
First Night Austin co-founder Anne Elizabeth Wynn received a special citation for her arts advocacy.
